Since we've had some previous discussions of the fact that many young people today are completely unfamiliar with "old fashioned" cameras (i.e., any camera that isn't built into a phone) I thought the group would enjoy this little slice o' life:

This evening I was at the home of some family friends for a party celebrating their daughter's high school graduation. I thought they might enjoy having some photos of it, so I had taken one of my RF cameras along and was snapping away casually.

At one point, out on the patio, I noticed one of the high school guys eyeing me as I shot a series of photos of a badminton game, cranking the thumb lever between shots. I figured he probably had never seen a manual-wind camera before and was just curious, but a few moments later I overheard him saying to his buddy:

"Now THAT'S the kind of camera to have. None of this digital stuff... just the pure basics."

I happened to be shooting with an R-D 1 -- but his heart obviously was in the right place, so I didn't burst his bubble, and I took care that he wasn't watching whenever I'd fold out the LCD to check my take!

My daughter is four years old, and she loves everything about my cameras. For her fourth birthday she got an oly stylus.

Shortly after she told me "When I'm big, I want a Leica like you have."

Did I say she's really smart?

Now instead of saving just for your daughter's college fund, you may also need to put away some money for her Leica fund... Hehehe...

There is hope for the future of RF afterall! I always fear that after my generation, nobody will understand the joy of setting exposure manually anymore.

She is smart indeed. My youngest is big, and uses (& loves) her Nikon FM. She hasn't been quite convinced of the virtues of a RF just yet, but its only a matter of time... 🙂

I've already decided that barring any huge accident/theft, I'm going to give her my M2 with my old elmar on it for her 18th birthday if she still wants to be like dad.

By that time I should have the 2 M6 classics that I want.

The funny thing is, she thinks that when she's five she'll be big. "When I'm 5, we can go out and take pictures together!"

Daddy's going to teach her how to do things the old fashioned way.

That is a really cool present. Though i didn't get it on a special day, and my dad wasn't big on photos, I love my Canon even more because it was handed down to me.

My sentiments exactly 😉 When my family was at a store the other day, I went to the electronics department, as I usually do, and my son went straight for the cameras. He looked at me and said that he wants a camera just like me. Now if I can get my daughter to take up photography, maybe she'll be more into my random roadtrips... and not mortal torture.

One thing I've noticed is that he's learned which camera is film and digital by the sound. With the price of cameras dropping, I may considering getting a cheap digital for him to play around with.

So cute -- my son is 4 right now... so much character at this age. He already thinks he's big. I would love to have my son (and my daughter, for that matter) to enjoy what I enjoy and do more exploring.

Food for thought, with things going the way they are at Leica, you might be able to use one of those M6s to fund a college education 🙂 I'm sure they will be "highly desirable" collector cameras at that time.

We live in Denmark, so college isn't going to be a problem. I could probably sell it to pay for her wedding when she's fifty or so.
