Today I took out my older daughter so that her mother could study at home. I took along my Canon VI-L with a 50mm/2 Serenar lens and put some Ilford XP2 Super film in the camera. I drove around Pensacola and took some photos while Dana played close to me. The sunlight was harsh and I should have better tried to get some partial shade into the photos to reduce the contrast. I may have overexposed some of the images. I got the film scanned directly after it was developed.

Raid, looks like you had some fun in the contrasty afternoon light... I would say you can't really assess the exposures here except to say they're "adequately" exposed! And blame inexpert printing for blowing the highlights. Of the ten, I'd point to #8 and #9 as better looking prints, the others printed too light. With the chromogenic XP2 film, it's nearly impossible to burn out the highlights in the negative. The print folks just didn't print the highlight detail that was present. This film is great for high-contrast situations like this, and tends to look a bit dull in dull light, again calling for a little expertise from the printer. :)

Doug: There were no prints made; the film was scanned directly in the Fuji Frontier machine. maybe the scans need some refinements then.

The fence shot worked nice. And one or two others. The rest seem to be overly "highlighted".

Perhaps the "instant scan" does seem to be the culprit?

Maybe "traditonal" C-41 development next time?

You may be right, but I thought a direct scan would preserve most details. I got the developed negatives too, so they did a C-41 developing, but no prints.

Great!

If you have the developed negs you can do a far better job of "processing" by scanning them and then using Photoshop (or whatever) to balance the contrast (if needed).

Yes, I could do so. I could also go back and do some work on the scans that I already have to see whether I can improve the appearance of the scans somehow.
