Some very cool astro photography

I especially like the ones that step outside the boundary of more traditional astrophotography.. the noctilucent clouds, star trails in hong-kong, and indeed, that black and white aurora.

As an aside, it never ceases to amaze me that sometimes with very modest equipment, you can create images like these, images that show that the night sky is more than a black blanket with some pinholes pricked into it. You just have to dress up warm and put your time in..

Thanks for the link.

Estimates:

At least 100 billion galaxies out there.

400 billion or so stars in our own galaxy.

Our galaxy is of "medium" size, whatever that is. A large galaxy contains around 100 trillion stars.

Estimate puts the quantity of just stars in our visible universe as it contains 10,000 billion billion stars.

Many stars near us host planetary systems.

I can't even begin to comprehend this.
