That sky was only of the "pale blue" variety. If you look at the 3rd image, the day was quite hazy. There is no PhotoShop in the cam to clone the sky away 😉

In the end, this is a small camera and don't expect the colour saturation of scanned Ektachrome. So if that is what you are looking for, I might agree that they are "crummy". But then pushed Tri-X is mega-crummy 😀

Tri-X doesn't have "Noise," it has "grain."

Noise is the dog-butt ugly cousin of the grain.

RAW, at least, will let you make better noise suppression decisions than Panasonic seems to make (with its other cameras).
Still, if it can't do a good looking 400 iso, I'll keep waiting for my ship to come in.

Wrong, small little cameras, especially those from panasonic give some very saturated colors, no it doesn't look like film but that is a tired argument. My girlfriends old fx9 shoots some of the most saturated colors I have seen out of a digital camera without post

An example, shot ev -2/3 at ISO 80 with her FX9, nothing wrong with that at all.


The camera obviously has some sort of preproduction problem, that or the people at panasonic need glasses.

ps. the image has no post, its just a direct resize from the actual which was shot with the cameras normal color setting

pps. I wish her little camera has something that let you control the aperture, this image could have been so much better...it default shot it at f2.8 but the shutter speed was 1/180 at ISO 80....oh well...what can you expect from what here in china they call a "stupid camera" (point and shoot)

It's a waste of time to judge the production camera's IQ from those sample shots. Let's wait until the cameras are actually shipping and the real reviews hit the web. Or better yet, you get one in your hands and try it for yourself!
WRT Panasonic noise, actual prints look amazing compared to what you see on your monitor. Try it sometime!

How many people said the Ricoh GRD couldnt shoot anything more then ISO 200 or something like that, if they could only see the exhibition I did where most of the pictures were GRD at 1600.....but then again not many of us print our pictures anymore eh?

This, in my view, could be a REALLY significant breakthrough in advancing compact digital cameras to a level we've been enjoying with Yashica 35s, Canonets, etc. If Panasonic has tamed their noise problems to a significant degree (the larger sensor could do that), you're going to see all my backup film gear up for sale (Olympus Stylus, Nikon L35AF, Yashica GX). 😀

I'm with Avotius here.... this combination of focal length range and lens speed is the bullseye territory I've been impatiently waiting for the camera manufacturers to hit. Will Canon, Nikon, et. al. follow? Am I hearing jingle bells over the horizon? 🙂
 
Anyone interested in a slightly used G9?

I would like to see one of the camera companies really show some moxy and come out with a 6mp camera with better DR and Low light performance. An aperture ring and shutter speed dial.

24-60 is nice and wide, but I like portraits at 75-90mm. A 28-70 would be better to me.
 
Those pictures look like ass, man I loved my F30, usable even at iso1600... but the features on this camera are a step in the right direction:

"When you focus in the Manual Focus mode, not only the focus distance but also the DOF (depth of field) according to the zoom range and aperture is displayed."

Fuji F30 is/was the closest thing to this.

Hmm.. RAW.... a good "range" for street shooting... fast lens... 3" LCD..

Not sure I'm going to "like" a zoom but that will "depend" I guess.

I wonder what the High ISO will be like?
Build quality?

Good to see that it's not going to be more than 10MP.

hmmmmmm... I wonder if this would be more palatable (hard to believe) than my current fave P&S, the Ricoh GRD II... gotta see some images out of this one first I guess 🙂

#3 would print very well on letter-size (nicely detailed at enlarged size on 19" monitor)...its so vastly much better than #1, and #2 is such a ridiculous "sample" image...that I wouldn't hire that reviewer to flip burgers. Why didn't Panasonic offer the camera to someone somewhat competent?

HOWEVER none of this matters: Nikon's coming, Nikon's coming!

They're introducing their supposed G9-killer in August. It does have some kind of optical finder and (hopefully true) RAW...
 
I think more people would take notice of this camera if it had the 10mp NMOS sensor that is used in the Panasonic and Olympus SLRs.
 
I guess the one thing that is a benefit here is that the camera makers (even Nikon) are seeing that there is a market for the "high end" or "pro" P&S type of camera.

If you mean excitement followed by disappointment, then yeah maybe.

If you mean the cameras are similar, heck no. One has a huge APS-C sensor, the other has a tiny 1/1.6" sensor. One is an F4 prime, the other is a 2.0-2.8 zoom. One is very slow, the other is probably just as quick as other digital P&S (but still slow compared to a film camera).

I'm hoping the image quality will be less like that first sample and more like that third one. I also hope it will cost well below $500.
