A magazine just emailed me and would like to use one of my photos in a commercial publication. They would like me to email a high res image to them. Do I ask for any compensation for the use of my photo? They just said they would send me a copy of the mag & give me credit for the photo. Is this the norm? Thanks

If you want the satisfaction of seeing your photo in print, give to them free.

If the magazine is a commercially successful newsstand magazine, I would personally ask them for money.

There's no "norm". They will do whatever they think they can get away with.

On the other hand, asking for a "contract" is overkill and nonsense. Just make an invoice with "one time right of publication in (issue/date)" and initial it.

For "Commercial Floor Coverings" I would ask $100 Canadian. They probably won't pay it. Drop the price down to $50 if they refuse, and you'll have about a 60% of getting some money.

I doubt they have much of a surplus budget for anything, including photos.

Whats a fair price to ask to use my photo?

Depends

for a mags that are local, that is, state or county with low subscriptions, a one time print rate (OTPR) may be under $100. USD. But for national mags, things change... Cover (front/inside front... Back/inside back) pay the most for a OTPR. and, as the number of printing goes up, so can the price paid. that is 100k mags printed, 250k, Mags printed, 500k mags printed, and so on.

There is a web site that has a basic pricing structure as a guide. I just can't find it now (4 computers ago)

1) WHERE in the mag will be used?
2) how much if a page will it take up? 1/8. 1/4, 1/2, full page
3) how many mags will be printed...Local or national?
4) what are your companies standard pay rates for a "One Time Use" contract?

If you decide to go for the free promo... MAKE SURE YOU GET PRINTED CREDIT UNDER or VERY NEAR the photo. Not just in the text in the article associated with your photo.

Good Luck 🙂
