Something about Leica owners photographing cats..

Re: dentists...I always associated them with titanium bicycles. I've never known a Serotta rider that wasn't a dentist. A little while back I stopped in my neighborhood bike co-op that must have had 5 or so of them, and a friend joked that something horrible must have happened at a local dental convention...

My cat doesn't seem to mind an SLR too much. That's one piece of equipment that gets used more to photograph cats than anything else: my brother left an old Micro-Nikkor at my house years and years ago and refuses to let me give it back to him. I don't have much use for it, so I'll pop it on and run through a short roll from the end of a bulk roll just for the heck of it taking pictures of things around the house.

I'm with rfaspen, she makes a great test subject for DR and developing. M5, 50 Planar, TMY in Rodinal

And a personal favorite, my SO's cat, a rescue from a very sad situation outside Spokane. He's afraid of everything, but wonderfully loving. M5, 35 Biogon, TMY in Perceptol

Ian, I'm glad your SO is making a once unhappy feline feel at home. My own cat was a rescued stray and she's going to be 16 in July. She was fearful and hated being inside. That's changed, to say the least! No authorized Leica 😉 pic of her as I'm in the process of buying an MA and a lens (Zeiss 35 Distagon?).

Our cats are endlessly fascinating and a camera at the ready is easier with something small close by like a rangefinder. I don't have mine in a case or a bag usually. My cat doesn't mind being photographed, except for his sixth sense of dashing off just when I've finished setting up. You have to be quick with cats sometimes, so an always-on rapid focus device with minimal shutter lag is just right. The second shot was with an M5, I think, and a tiny Voigtlander 25mm that was resting on the piano next to where I sit.

And it's not just our own cats. This fellow trots into the forecourt of our building at work on a regular basis, probably bored by his dull life at home in a street nearby. He is a flaneur of sorts. Enjoys looking, and enjoys being noticed and admired. Murakami loves cats, but doesn't keep one. He has several nearby where he lives. They are his friends he says. He sees them daily.

Cats like a life of luxury and ease and so pick people with luxury cameras. Being photographed is a small price to pay...

My best Leica cat pictures have been taken with a Barnack. That may change.
