Something rattling inside my r-d1

I just noticed yesterday that something is rattling inside my R-D1. Sounds like it's possibly a loose screw and the noise seems to be coming near the top of it. Whatever is rattling hasn't affected the performance of the camera.

Has anyone else had this happen. If so, any recommendations on what I should look for?

Also, I remember seeing a thread on here with photos and instructions for taking apart the camera. Does anyone have a link to that message?

I seem to recall someone else complaining about a rattle in the top of their R-D1. Decided to send it in for servicing. Perhaps a "search" would turn up that thread.

Yes mine too has a rattle but not like something is loose per se- is this normal?!

Mine is totally silent. I don't think rattles are normal in electro-mechanical devices.

A slight rattle from the top of the camera is normal - there's nothing wrong. (That's not to say yours hasn't a screw loose though!)

I've had the top plate off mine to make few modifications, and there's definitely nothing untoward adrift. However, as I wasn't interested in the rattle, I can't tell you what causes it!

Mine does too. But it seems to be working so I'm not too worried. I really do love using this camera!

Wow -- I guess this isn't uncommon.

Since it works fine and other people have a similar rattle, I guess I'll just keep using it.

How hard do you have to shake it to make it rattle? I'm not in the habit of shaking my cameras very much. Just a little rockin' and rollin'.

I initially thought the noise was coming from the metal rings that attach to the strap. But when I hold those still and give the camera a quick shake, there is something else moving inside, in the top portion of the camera. It hasn't affected my ability to use it -- but I figured it would be worth opening it up to make sure something important isn't loose or about to break.

Given that my camera is out of warranty, I might open it up at some point to peek around. However, since others have this problem, opening it up isn't a priority unless someone tells me otherwise...

Mine only emits slight rattling noise when the battery compartment is empty.

Mine also rattles when shaken. If you listen carefully you can hear a faint click when whatever moves reaches the end of it's travel in either direction. The moving part is loose but restrained so I don't think there's a problem.

My Canon 350D has an orientation sensor with a sliding ball bearing that senses when the camera position changes form portrait to landscape orientation. This makes a rattling noise when the camera is moved or shaken. Does sthe R-D1 also have this feature?

I also realized that it only makes a noise if I move forward & backward, not side to side. Anyone else have this noise?

Mine makes a very faint "ticking" if I shake it forward and backward. It's going on two years old and 10,000 exposures with no problems, so I don't think the noise is anything serious.

Judging from the character of the sound and where it seems to come from (toward the right end of the camera) I'm guessing it's something innocuous such as one of the coil springs that surround the shutter-release shaft. A long spring such as this is unsupported at its center, so the center part could be moving back and forth and clicking on the shaft.

i think it is caused by the battery door, try hold the door tight, and shake again, do you hear the sound again?

After I took the film out the rattle was completely gone, just perfect ever since...
