Something strange happened

I just had a slidefilm processed wich was taken with one of my Kiev's.

- No strange frame-spacings, frames were close but none overlapping !
- All exposures OK (except the few where the photographer made an error) !
- Due to the close frames ? - i got 40 frames back !
- Only 1 frame with a strange lightleak or maybe internal reflection, was taken in headlight by the sea !

During the period where i took the pictures, the Kiev behaved flawlesly, smooth, no shutter stuck.

I just wonder if this would ever happen to me again !

Sounds like your camera may have been assembled on a day between Wednesday and Friday back when it was made in Ukraine...

Usually, if you load film in a dark place into your camera you can get 4 more exposures next to standard. It's 36+4. If you cut a leader for a bottom loader, you still can get the usual 36 exposures.

Kiev's that work good are great for slides. Exposing slides is a little tricky. Their tolerance is quite low (mostly with 100 and 50 asa films), in fact there's only one good exposure and thats the right one.

Its better to avoid overexposure in daylight. Especially when the sky is in the composition. Or the light will eat the top of the roofs and trees. One or a half stop under won't do much harm in such situation.

Hmm, very distressing result for a KIev. Better strip it down for a full cla then I am sure it will return to normal.

Thank's for all the good advice.
I have had the 2 Kiev's for some years now and run lots of rolls through them, but never had any worked so fine.
I better run a film through the other one and see if i conditions can be normalized.

Kiev's are great cameras, but if they work too well then a lot of the entertainment dissapear !

I am not about to claim that all my FSUs are bereft of "excitement" when it comes to their output but I admit that it's unusual for dodgy frames not to be down to "operator error". The OP does remind me very much of my Kiev 4A too! Non-overlapping frames of variable but acceptable spacing, correct exposure (unless misjudged by myself) and no light leaks. Yes, I'll be keeping it!

I'll second that and add that there's all those lovely old lenses that they seem to be giving away these days...

Sure, i think you just have to be very careful when winding, then the framespacing should be ok. Actually the Kiev's are able to give great results if you are a little careful with all operations, they don't give anything away for free.
