Sometimes I get 'black' picture?

why do I sometimes get completely black pictures? it ususally occures when I shot rapidly, but still it happens when I just take a pic, and then when I look at the LCD, it is all black??

yes, the lens cap is off, and it doesnt matter what lens i use...

any input would be appreciated.

i have only one Sandisk Ultra II 1GB card...

i would say it happens 5% of times.. so as a habit, I shot doubles if I can...

strange.. isnt it?

i'm just curious if it happens to anyone else or just me.

It happened to me a couple of times in the past (perhaps 5-10 times in over a year) .....l not on a regular base.
Most of the times when the battery was almost empty.
I can not recall if it happened in the past when i used a 3d party battery.
I switched to all Epson batteries and it did not happen for a long time.
Do you use original Epson batteries ... so we can eliminate that possible cause?
I have a "standard" Sandisk 1 gb card ( no ultra).

On my first R-D1 I started getting black frames after about 1000 exposures. It was definitely a camera problem, as it happened on all the SD cards that I had, of several types.

It got rapidly worse, until about 25% of frames were black. After which I took the camera back and got a replacement.

Hope yours is just a card problem!

Never had a black frame with Sandisk Ultra II 1GB cards (neither Extreme III 1GB, Transcend 150x 2GB) and i use mainly 3d party batteries but i don't let them go empty generally.

I had the same problem as well on my first R-D1 which I returned to Epson. I don't know what causes it, but the problem occurred on three different SD cards.

It would help to rule out the card as the culprit. My first step would be to try other cards. It could be the card, but if it isn't...

Surely if this was a card problem, it would happen in any camera, but I've never heard of it.

Seems more likely a shutter failure. Are these symptoms known from the bessa range? I believe they use a similar shutter.

Arrggghh! This just happened to me twice in the last 24 hours. Same card, a Lexar 1gb card. I never had this problem before though. Sigh. I bought an extended warranty on the camera through Mack. I wonder if they would replace it if it proves not to be the card.

My experience with 3rd party batteries is that they are "empty" before the R-D1 indicates them as such. More often than not, the R-D1 tells me the battery is still about 25% full but the shutter freezes or the image can't be saved (properly). Replacing the battery with a fresh one (preferably the original Epson one) alway cures the freezing or the non-saving of the image. This experience is why I always use the Epson battery and only use the 3rd party batteries when I have no way to quickly charge the Epson battery. My 3rd party batteries are really backups-just-in-case. I never rely on them for a day's shooting.

I agree with the battery problems. I only now shoot with two Epson batteries. When the first black frame appeared, it was on a freshly charged Epson battery. When the second incident occurred the battery was just shy of 1/2 full.
