I think Keith is thinking about his OWN choices - is the hardware he is using truly right for him?
So, seeing that his chosen hardware emerges from a beautiful womb in Japan is somehow affirming of the choice.

I think sometimes Roger dissects people's comments and takes them too literally ... or looks for some meaning that isn't really there. 😀
It's a puff piece ... but it is based on my respect for a company that appears to be doing things a little differently to the rest! 🙂

These videos from Sigma along with videos from other companies are well done and often illustrate the amount of labor that goes into manufacturing our cameras and lenses. I have owned some fine lenses from Sigma in the past and my latest acquisition, the Sigma 60/2.8 DN Art lens, so far has met all of my expectations. Thanks for posting the link, Keith.

Keith, don't make me laugh. I have a Sigma 50/1.4 for Nikon:
1- it is not even a 50mm, but a 45mm, they could have avoided lying
2- when you try to focus it manually, it makes an impression of handling a Russian tractor engine with sand inside the gears
3- while the rear bokeh is nice, the lens fails to deliver any meaningful sharpness, not to speak of micro contrast - if I put vaseline on any summicron it will still look better

Yes ... they aren't perfect and have made some lemons in the past I agree.
Leica released a six thousand dollar digital camera and forgot to mention the IR problem that turned blacks into purple.

My point is, that no matter how nice is the ad, you actually have to look at the products Keith, better still, look at your photos, and if you like them, then forget about the gear, and if you don't, make sure the fault is not with the photographer.. 😀

The Sigma lenses if the last couple of years (the new releases) are much better then what they were even doing the last 5 let alone prior. I have had some crappy lenses I have tried from Sigma in the late 80s or so.. I actually never bought another Sigma lens until I took a chance on the dp2 Merrill. This convinced me that Sigma knew what they need to do to put a good quality lens in front of that foveon sensor. Which eventually led me to plonk down the cash for the sd1 Merrill dslr and all those SA mount lenses..
Right now I have no art grade lenses for the sd1, they are all no older then about 4-5 years old in terms of announce release dates. They are still really good.. The 35f1.4 art lens Keith has is one of the best out there. I have the pre-art 50f1.4 which is not bad but not in the same league. My next lens is the either going to be the 28f1.8 or the 30f1.4 because I am more partial to a 40-45 fov.
The lens on the dp cameras on the otherhand are specially designed for the foveon sensor and the iq is amazing, unlike the slr lenses which were designed to work w/ multiple sensors.

I think my attitude has less to do with photography/gear and more to do with the self indulgent ego tripping that some of the other manufacturers partake of ... Sigma does none of this!
Generally no words in these videos .... just images. I like that! 😀

"Sigmalux" 50/1.4 (pre-art version) is actually popular lens out there, competing with brand lenses from Canon and Nikon. nothing to be ashamed of, like vaseline commenter earlier suggests.

I love the first video. Makes Leica manufacturing look slap dash, at least in the video. I remember buying my first second hand non-Leica. It was the Hexar AF. Would I cringe when I opened the post pack and found a non-Leica camera with some plastic? Would I hate it? Would I lament the 'build quality'? No, no, and no. I loved it and I still do. The build quality is great. The execution of all the ideas is great. And the ideas are great. Seeing what you do with your Merrill and seeing this new one makes me relieved to know that there will be a life after the Monochrom. When the first free sensor replacement for the M9 comes to nothing in a year or two because of more dust, and the same fate befalls my Monochrom, there'll still be something unique and focussed to enjoy from another serious camera manufacturer. Leica's Monochrom's greatest achievement may be to confirm that a serious high resolution pure black and white digital camera has to remain a market staple. Oh, it's colour too. That's good....

The Director, Producer, Camera man/woman, Marketing people did a fantastic job promoting not only one product but the whole company, certainly made me think of SIGMA in a different way for a minute.
