You win the prize! The top is with a Nikkor LTM 50/F2.0 and the bottom is with a Canon LTM 50/1.4. If I recall correctly, both were taken wide-open.

After comparing the Quinon to my rigid Summicron, I sold the 'Cron. Even with less sharpness I like the Quinon better.
Then I got a Canon 1,5. That one lost as well, even being faster. Also because of distracting out of focus rings.

Your`s might be later still.....mine starts off with the two numbers #25 (1956) and somewhere in the #29 series (1957) the lenses ended 🙁

I owned a <EP> one too, about two years ago, they are quite rare, I`ve only seen like 4 or 5 <EP> lenses in the past 20 years!
(about as rare as the f1.2/50 <EP>) - mine was a 1955 one, which went lock, stock and barrel to a photographic museum, together with a <EP> IIF2 w/Rapidwinder 😉 ~ I replaced it with a "non <EP>" one off a Canon VT, a late 1956 model, like yours, getting into parts of the last one`s made......Canon`s "Real" Dream Lens, the infamous "Japanese Sonnar".

Yes, we`re ALL VERY SICK HERE..........truly afflicted with "Sonnaritis"!

Gladly there`s no known cure for this overwhelming disease, which ruins all judgement, makes you see eveything in 3D! (especially pretty girls!), as it extracts vast amounts of money out of your wallet for no apparent resason and in the end gives you a feeling of being refreshed and full of Bokeh! 😛😀

On many threads, people speak highly of the Sonnar lens design. Other people's love of this lens design has sparked my interest in getting one. However, I can't figure out why people like the lens design so much?

From what I have read they were originally developed due to their ability to control flare in the days before multicoating...I would assume that their original popularity is directly linked to better results due to less flare.

I think a large reason that they are esteemed now is because they have a bit different look than other modern designs (some people are really tuned into it, others, not so much). It also happens to be the current "IT" lens on various forums which is probably the biggest factor in its resurgence.

The fact that my equipment is prettier than I am is 1 of the main reasons why I carry it around--it distracts viewers away from me, like having an attractive companion. Works even better when the camera is up to your face. 😛

Thanks for that titbit. I 've been playing with a J3 the last couple months, it has shown surprising resistance to flare even without hood.

Truth be told, the camera is not even used (prefer digital for the convenience), just sitting pretty for shots like these. And like you, it's way prettier than I am. 😛
