Sons

First photo is my son at 14 just a couple of minutes after his first glider solo. He had an absolutely gorgeous 45 minute flight.

Pentax 6x7 and 55mm f3.5 I think.

The second is my son on his 16th birthday after making his first powered solo flight.

I think it was a Nikon F3 and 50mm. Can’t remember exactly.

The 3rd is my son at age 17 not long after getting his privet pilots license. We went out for a Sunday “spin”.

Nikon F3P most likely with 16mm Nikkor.

He’s now 42.

A sailor and his gal.
This would have been my father's 99th birthday. This picture from 1942 shows him at 17 with my grandmother just before he shipped out for the Pacific. He saw quite a bit of action on USS Shaw. He was the second to youngest of 8 children. She was a widow and had developed polio as a child and could not use her left arm or leg properly. (Let's not go back to that again!). She was raising her 8 children alone. He had dropped out of high school to serve and had her permission. 3 of his older brothers also joined the Navy. He was much older when he got back after the war. I sort of see this as the bookend to the Times Square photo of the sailor kissing the nurse; go away a boy and return a man.

Four generations: The dam in the background is the Robert K. Michaels dam which was named after my father who designed it as part of a flood control project. Standing, Robert K. Michaels Jr. (Bob), Robert K. Michaels III (Rob) and Robert K Michaels. IV (Kent)
