Yes, thats because the camera body is particularly small relative to the sensor size making the lens look big relative to the camera. A FF DSLR would add a much larger body to a similarly sized (or slightly larger) lens. One can always put a 120g 35 2.8... or 28 Elmarit asph or 200g 50 ZM planar or (insert many other options) on this body, but thats a bit trickier on a DSLR, in most cases.

Now think about travel, assignments and second bodies compared to a FF DSLR system. If a person wants a smaller camera system still, there is Fuji and various other APS-C options to chose from, but complaining that this FF camera has lenses that are too large suggests you are comparing it to APS-C systems i.e. apples to oranges.

Fuji may come up trumps if they produce a really high spec Xpro-2 with, say 24-28MP, because the lenses are reputedly great (and may be able to pay down enough detail) and some might prefer the fact that they are a little smaller and lighter due to the smaller sensor. However, it won't be FF and therefore a different choice. Better for some and worse for others. Sounds like you want a smaller package (incl lenses), which means a smaller sensor.

Just look at how fat and bulky the lens is compared to the body..

Difference in FPS is probably connected to sensor pixel count and, respectively, sensor readout.

On the 5n, if you turn off the EC, it's way louder. Like the first gen nex-5.

• When you shoot at high shutter speeds with a large diameter lens attached, the ghosting of a blurred area
may occur, depending on the subject or shooting conditions. In such cases, set this function to [Off].

• When a lens made by another manufacturer (including a Minolta/Konica-Minolta lens) is used, set this
item to [Off]. If you set this function to [On], the correct exposure will not be set or the image brightness
will be uneven.

Ordering now might not get a camera until January.

IF the camera lives up to the hype, Nikon, Canon, Olympus will have to respond with similar to remain competitive.

It would not be a bad idea for Leica either.

Alas, the decision makers at Leica are not smart enough to make such a camera.
They are too busy wasting corporate profits on imitation Apple stores
that Leica customers must pay for in the form of even more expensive products.

I look at the Leica stores as boutique stores... the same style of store that every other luxury brand has in NYC. Buyers will pay no matter what...

The Apple stores are very mainstream at this point.

Unable to compete on sensor and features, and the question of the marketing leading "pop" of their lenses under heavy competition from Zeiss now in all sectors, perhaps the best hope for profits is the luxury, image, packaging and product design that will sell to a "money no object" type of customer to backfill the gritty Leica M users of old going to Sony.

Leica has great products if you like the Jewellery and construction aspect and the mechanical precision and joy of the RF (which I do).
If you don't then Leica wouldn't appeal in the A7r world (which IMHO is also very well made).

Lastly there is some assumption that Canikon will respond. I really don't think these guys "get it" (check out the 1 series - designed brief simply not to compete with their APS-C brand, or the EOS-M, designed not to compete with, well, anything they make) and even if they did have a FF CSC response in the next few years, who is to say Sony hasn't already made dominant headwinds in this market.
I think Sony deserves it. Especially after using a RX1R which has totally blown me away (after many years of the M9 I might add).

I recently started using a Nex-5N, never bothering to turn the
First Shutter Curtain mode off. Anyway, I just shot 3 consecutive shots of the same view, Off, On, then Off again with an MF legacy lens, and yes, it does indeed affect the exposure by raising Auto ISO from 100 with it Off to 160 with it on.

It also makes the shutter sound (not so much louder) but slightly
more sustained. Sort of a (cha-shink) instead of a (cha-ink). Subtle, but noticable. 🙂

Sony profits are terrible. Leica makes more. Sony has been laughed at for a decade by still shooters.

The A7r is the biggest tech coup in the digital camera age. Wake up. What do you think all the fuss is about?

as to taunting, it's derigueuer on many subjects here, but I'm not taunting. After years of hearing the E mount laughed at, I'm gloating 🙂

Word on street: A7r now sold out in US till Jan.

@jsrockit look at those samples. A7r up till now has been thought to be not a viable primary system camera, like 5D, because of AF performance. Yes I hate AF, but pros use it alot. However, it's now clear that A7r+LAEA4+alpha glass gives AF speed and IQ second to no DSLR.

The market revealed 7 years ago that this exact design (with the centered viewfinder hump) is what the average consumer perceives to be an essential attribute of a "professional" camera. I recall reading that this is the major reason why the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1 was not successful (because it didn't have it).

So the marketers & designers at Sony did their jobs well. Just because a few vocal rangefinder enthusiasts here don't like SLR-styled bodies does not mean this camera won't be a huge international success.

I'll probably buy one of the two models in mid-summer 2014. By then I'll know for sure. I can't wait to use my 35mm Version I Summulix Aspherical lens on it! That one's incredible!!
