just was given a sony mavica (cd300) today!
it looks to be in great shape and is charging at the moment…not sure how old the battery is or if it will hold a charge.
need to read the manual (yes, i rather enjoy reading the manuals on my gear) and see if i can get an image out of the old thing.
anyone have experience with this camera?
tips or experiences you'd care to share?
it came with 2 rewritable cds and what looks like some software that i assume needs to be loaded onto my computer...

A work friends wife shot vacation photos and lost or scrambled the files due to a magnetic clasp on her purse comming in contact with the floppys
Other than seeing Mavica's in thrift stores , this third party antidote is all I know

it's a funky looking thing...
its interesting from a digital historical standpoint,
and was quite the camera in its day,
but gives poor results compared to a modern smart phone.

I had the original Sony Mavica ... little 2" floppy drives saving analog still video captures. Mostly useless, no resolution to speak of, but interesting and fun to play with. I gave it to Good Will many years ago.

When I saw this thread I had to hit google to find out what a Mavica is. The miracle that is wikipedia has an image of the original 1981 prototype:
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Mavica#mediaviewer/Fichier:Sony_Mavica_1981_prototype_CP+_2011.jpg
Now THAT would truly be back to the future...a magnificent thing indeed!

There is a gentleman in the camera club I belong to who uses several different Sony Mavica models. If you want noise, hot pixels, and low resolution that's your ticket.

This thread has me inspired / thinking...I have a Panasonic FZ20 I was given. Perhaps I should take heed of the example Back Alley is setting here with the Mavica and go out and use this camera.

I think it has been a while since the last RFF shooting event. How about a little <~4mp / >~10yo digital challenge?

Oh now you're talking Jeff. Best idea I've heard all day. It's genius. And the thing is, back when cameras of that vintage were new, people would use them, acknowledge the shortcomings relative to film, but still take images they could use and be perfectly satisfied with. So why not try the same now? It'd be interesting, for sure.

Boy! I must be one hell of a good photographer, I was able to get really decent image quality out of my Mavica. That said, it's like all early digitals, doesn't like low light. Other than that, if you set it on the highest quality jpeg you will get pretty nice images. Do you have the mini discs for it?

I had a Mavica (1998) but it must have been older as it used 3.5 floppys. It was working until the I couldn't find floppys anymore: let along find a computer that could handle them. It worked way longer than my Canon SureShot sd10.
