Had a great day here in South Florida, 80f, sunny, actually very sunny. I could not make out the LCD most of the afternoon. I managed to get some decent shots, but only with luck.

Yep, head on down there to south Florida and bother Akiva. Don't consider stopping here in central Florida. Nothing to see here, just keep on moving folks.

I used the kit zoom lens. Without autofocus I would have been screwed since I literally could not see the LCD except a reflection of my own face. Was that a kit lens ?

BTW anyone wishing to head down here for a warm up, PM me for cool things to do like which beaches are NOT for tourists, trips into the Everglades, etc.

Screen Brightness Settings?
Screen Brightness Settings?
Did you play with the screen brightness? There's an outdoor screen brightness setting, not sure what the actual menu callout is, that brightens the screen significantly to try to aid outdoor viewing.
I find there are times when EVFs are indispensable. If I were Sony my top priority would be getting a NEX3/5-compatible EVF to market....

Yes I had the LCD on the "sunny day" setting and even that did not help. It was extremely sunny yesterday (Florida is the sunshine state for good reason). EVF or even an OVF would have helped.

Use an external viewfinder, or change your camera ;-)

With the Clearviewer, your head and/or the camera often blocks the sun well (I'm not affiliated with them.) I do want an EVF, though.

Curious how the NEX's can be such good and progressive design on the one hand, but fatally flawed by poor design on the other.......
I am seriously tempted by an NEX but while there is no real flash provsion, accessory shoe or viewfinder potential it's a no-no,...plus, documentation is very poor so we don't know whether an EVF is even possible, or what the pins in the socket actually do.
Potentially a fantastic miniature digital imaging system but too many bits that require long workshop time to create and develop.

This is inexpensive relative to a Schneider or Rodenstock loupe.
My 3x Schneider works well if one fails to notice its size.

This time it was the NEX 3 with the CV 35/1.4 SC

Akiva, that's why Olympus has the EVF-2. Bright, and big view of the scene, not your reflection
Or use a darkcloth (small beach towel work as well).

That Nex set needs viewfinders, optical or better yet electronic ones.
I was asked to take a picture of some tourists in Central America last month, on a beach, and I could make out nearly nothing on the LCD on the back of their mini-compact camera. Cut through one head by mistake which made them laugh ... and then gave up. They said they could not see enough either to take good pictures/frames themselves, but seeing me with my rangefinder in my hand they thought I would/could do better. ... No way I think: let the NEX get a viewfinder of sorts first ...

hoodman kit might work, but a bit pricey. I don't have (or haven't yet) any trouble framing in bright outdoor light, but accurate focusing at 7x on moving subjects is tough. That's why I'm keeping the AF 16/2.8. Will be selling my MF 15/4.5 ltm and maybe even 21/4 lens, as the 28/2.8 Canon ltm is a great match, along with a 50 pre-asph lux!

I'm sure you guys already know about the FDA-SV1 finder.. Haven't seen it yet in the flesh, but this seems underway: http://www.sony.nl/product/dsa-viewfinder-accessories/fda-sv1

Each time I wanted to try it, the Sony Style store said "we don't have it, we only order it when the customer wants it ; orders from the top". Another case of product they don't want to sell. :bang:

I just don't use the 16 prime enough to justify this, but now that there is a 3rd party cold shoe out, it would be nice to find some finders for 1.5x the popular prime sizes, but will probably be expensive like the ones are/were for the rd1.
