I think this camera is quite possibly one of the best platforms to play with all sorts of lenses out there.

A7:
• Top and chassis made of magnesium
• Plastic/rubber covered dials with aluminum top cover.
• Updated version of A99 sensor (conventional microlens design?)

A7R:
• Top, chassis, and front plate made of magnesium for extra rigidity
• Dials are one-piece billet aluminum
• Gapless and Offset microlens design

Yeah i saw that also. I guess Leica USERS always have to pay a premium 🙄

I was all for A7 until I saw that the microlens array to fix short flange problem was omitted. My hope is that it won't make "that" much of a difference in the end. For that reason, I'm looking forward to Steve Huff's test results with M lenses on both cams (anyone know others who may be testing with M mount lenses?).

One couple questions here that I can (hopefully) answer:

It is my understanding that both the 7 & 7R use offset mircorlenses. The 7R sensor is a gapless design, the 7 is not.

I'll confirm this with Sony next week at PhotoPlus.

I didn't have any M-mount glass with me during the briefing, but I will be getting more extensive shooting time with both the 7 & 7R at the end of the month. I'll have my M 240 with me as well, and am planning on taking some quick comparison shots with a bunch of different lenses; the widest I've got on hand is the LTM version of the Voigtlander 15mm.

M9 might, but it was going to dip below this level anyway eventually.

Not unless you have something else that'll work better for your needs.

Leica lives in a niche which won't be particularly affected - some pros (or professionally thinking/accounting consumers) that considered a M in spite of being a Leica, exclusively for fitting some short flange non-Leica legacy lens to a FF body, will readjust. But the bulk of Leicas are sold for their focus mechanism or lenses, or for the prestige they carry among the non-photographing wealthy.

Canon and Nikon will hurt more - if the Sonys don't have some design flaw they will be a significantly superior solution for all the pros doing cinematography with DSLRs. Which is supposedly a pretty significant segment of the Canikon pro sales...

The only pancake-esque lens I've got in M-mount is the 40mm Summicron-C... but I'll give it a whirl with that, as it sees frequent use on the 240 and I'm curious to see how it compares.

If your main concern is using legacy 35mm lenses on a full-frame digital body, these bodies are a solid solution; I'm in wait-and-see mode to see how the 7 and 7R handles wide-angle rangefinder glass at the corners/edges. But $2,300 for the 7R is more palpable than $7k for the M 240.

But if you want an optical finder a couple rangefinder, Leica is still the only digital game in town.

Am I tempted to sell my 240 and get one of these? No. Well, maybe. But if I did, I'd want to scrape together the money and get a Monochrom as well.

It heralds an era that I have been hanging out for, at last.

I'am really interested in this camera. Hope there comes an impressive line of AF Zeiss lenses ( more than the slr alpha ). Zeiss has announced 5 MF lenses for the A7 too, having an MF Zeiss line optimised for the A7 will be awesome, hopefully a killer Macro Planar.
BUT I don't think A7 buyers really want MF lenses now as most of them have tons of them to adapt. A strong AF Zeiss line could make the A7 a really interesting camera, specially for the Zeiss fans, with a MF line as a bonus and more diversity. Sigma making some more affordable glass would be neat too. And Sony can make the kit lens and some stupid pancakes so we can also take this camera somewhere. 🙂

Think I will wait a year to see how the A7 and roadmaps go, and see what Fuji is up to, but it could be hard waiting that long. 🙂

If I wanted to shoot Leica M digital I would buy a "cheap" M9. I probably will at some point as they are getting into my price zone.
I don't see the A7 as competition or a subsitute for the M, shooting experience will be different, like shooting a Contax G or a Leica M is a different experience.
