Sony RX-100 - 1" sensor zoom compact

I was just reading the glowing Luminous Landscape review of this camera.

Six hundred fifty bucks. No viewfinder. Not wide enough on the wide end and not fast enough on the long end. No manual or software included.

I stopped reading there.

Another camera maker takes a relatively large, high performance sensor, shoe horns it into a tiny camera body, leaves out a whole range of essential features and sets an unrealistically high price.

It coulda been....

and it will still sell well.

We're getting awfully close to a Contax T3 replacement. My fantasy is for APS-C or larger.

David, you'd be surprised at how close the Ricoh GXR's output can be to the Contax T3. Put the 28mm module on it and it's getting close to the T3's size. When I run the files through Lightroom and compare them with T3 images I'm often surprised at how similar they can look. I just wish that the camera was exactly T3-sized.

I was thinking more like my Contax T (w/ flash module removed) replacement.. Amazon and B&H are saying available on 18th. The next big camera show is in September. Let's c what others are going to announce in this new 1 inch sensor family.

What Sony has done is very tempting... GAS :bang:

Yeah right, this RX100 is really tempting. It's actually available at Adorama now.

Canon are releasing a new "mirror-less box" with a pancake lens 14mmf2.0
There are other lenses. i would rather buy a DSLR than these cameras..the Sony 1"( it is NOT 1"" sensor) and the Canon with APS format.
Personally i have so much fun with my small selection of P/S digitals, doubt i'll buy a DSLR until cheaper full frame..soon!

im bothered by the lack of viewfinder option but all in all its a great camera judging by OOC JPEGS. look at the ISO at 3200.. it does better than some DSLR's from a couple years back. AF speed seems extremely good too.

I understood that with today's technology and mainstream design a truly pocketable (max 30mm thickness) camera cannot have an integrated viewfinder. Starting from there a few months ago the S100 was on top of my "real pocketable" list. the Sony now switched to the pool position. Maybe I will pull the trigger after summer time.

I have had a couple of cameras without viewfinders, never again. Nice looking output, but the viewfinder thing is a deal breaker for me.

Cheers

I agree with you how important a VF is, but: are there any very compact pocketable cameras on the market WITH VF? To my knowledge, there aren't any :( Or did I miss any news?

Well, There was....I have one o these and its a nice little camera, Very small. The VF is not great but it is usable and I've used it a lot.

We just got one of these cameras in and it's a joy to use. It feels quite hefty but the camera is extremely intuitive and I was shooting in no time. I didn't get more than a few minutes of play time, I'll post some photos when I get an extended trial with the camera.

Quick first thoughts: the aperture blades look nearly circular at all settings, the "custom" ring around the outside of the lens can be used to fine tune focus and the object tracking is really accurate.

this is funny because the lx7 has a smaller sensor than the lx5

hence the debadged leica lux will have a smaller sensor

I gave in just pushed the button. I was thinking of this camera as my only camera when traveling. The bigger sensor than the compact P&S and excellent picture quality I have seen so far. The high ISO capabilities allows me to shoot at all circumstances. Selling my DLux 5 now.

My best friend marries in two weeks and after long thinking about some present for him, .. ehmmm ... them  I decided to go for some nice, rather compact camera. I was very close to Nikon V1 (or Olympus E-P3) when the RX100 came along. I was not sure - but once the review from Steve Huff was out I just went and ordered the thing.

Of course I will have to test it first whether it works correctly ;) - but the camera seems to deliver some amazing IQ and performance and does nice video too.

... I never thought of my friend to be an 'early adopter' though :D

I'm very ready to pull the trigger on a bunch of stuff like the RX100 but I'm going to wait 'til after this falls Photokina.
