Sooo close to picking up a G1!

Well, today I first put off getting one after hearing rumours that there will be an Olympus coming this summer...

But then, after reading the test referred to in another thread ( http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=67977 ) I feel like getting one early tomorrow!

I guess that what really made me curious is that the review seems down to earth - and at the same time promising when it comes to the EVF and focusing...

I had the same feeling when I first handled it, that I might actually use and get used to the EVF.

If it is true that focusing the G1 manually on static objects really feels good & right, then I think I might really use it if I get one...

So; the only thing that stops me right now is image quality - which also seems to be OK when everything is taken into account.

Anybody here having comments on the EVF and focussing? Seems like most owners so far find especially the focussing quite OK...?

If I were looking for another camera the G1 would be it. I wouldn't hesitate. IF!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, everything I read points to more positives about the G1. In my mind it wouldn't be worth waiting to see what Oly offers in M43, whenever it may come. The G1 seems like a real winner.....IF you are looking at this time.

And no matter what may come in the next few months, the G1 is still going to be just as capable as it is today, which seems to be pretty good in my eyes.

This is one of the first threads posted about manual focusing. Manual focus is a treat. I actually can focus it, unlike what I found with an M8.

The EVF is one "feature" that I'm leery about. I can't speak to the G1's EVF, but I had the Digilux 2. It has an EVF. It worked but was very uninspiring and slow. From what I've read about the G1, its EVF is far more advanced. It's apparently similar to the one Panasonic uses in their high-end video gear. But EVFs can get ugly in low light and there's usually some lag.

A lot of people are unsure about the finder, I have found it perfectly usable for everyday situations, and the way it can kind of see in the dark makes it brighter then my 20D's finder when in dark places. As for size of the finder, its larger then my 20D's finder and smaller then my girlfriends 5D finder. A good in between I think, also it is a different aspect ratio so when shooting 4:3 it is actually pretty nice to use (the only way I have used it). Really though, if you are so unsure, walk into a shop and look at one. As for manual focus, smooth and nice, very nice and as soon as that price comes down a smidgen I will pick it up as 850 dollars (local price) is too much for me.

Why are people so biased against EVF's?

Anyway, manual focus with this camera is nothing short of a revelation. And yes, this is an experienced guy talking who has been photographing for over ten years and has used SLRs, TLRs and RFs.

I want the HD video version of the G1 (try that with your Leica 😀) but it really is a very good camera. You won't have high end Nikon or Canon quality, but it is a solid performer if the tests might be believed.

If you don't need video and have the money, go for it.

Tested if briefly in a store today, and postponed getting one.

It really seems to be dead easy to focus! The only thing is that I don´t know if I would be using it too much after getting it... It is after all a camera with lots of menus and stuff - the main reason that I am not using my Nikons too much.

I guess that I will still get it, but in the meantime I will use my cash either for another second hand M8, or a film M. Then we´ll see when I get to test the G1 for a longer period.

I just realized when standing in the store that although it might be a good camera and a novelty, I would still use it maybe 5% of the time I shoot my personal stuff only. It doesnt make sense then to use 25% of the costs of a backup M8 (second hand) that I would put to use much more often!
