When Dee started to use the term "Kontax", out of some of his own special writing style, in which he likes to add a "K" to many terms related with Kievs, I happily coined his new term, for solving to me the need to write Contaxes and Kievs whenever I wanted to refer to their common design.

Besides, for me, as a Kiev fan owner, it was a way to pay my respect to the German designers of Zeiss Ikon.

But then something happened my naive mind didn't anticipate. Contax owners here felt hurt to their bones, exploding through Mike Kovacks mouth in an attack of hysteria, decorated with unappropriate words within a civilized forum like RFF. No single Contax owner found the need to disassociate himself from it.

After all if their precious cameras are not getting much use, at least the money they put in and the time they waited to get them fixed should merit them some minimum "status", that the association with the Kievs was lowering in their ignorant minds. You have to be a real ignorant to regard the Kievs as "Contax copies". A real ignorant, or a real snob. Or both altogether.

Unrelated to this, as the term "Kontax" started to catch, many confused fellows left the impression we Kiev owners feel ashamed of our lower priced cameras. Therefore time has come to voice the difference between empty snobism and real pride.

The truth is that the money difference between both cameras is not so high for us Kiev owners, who can spare the need to send them to expensive or/and lenghty overhaul, due either to our own knowledge, or our known much cheaper fixers. True, I have never felt a Contax in my hands and therefore allways treated Henry Scherer with utmost respect, even more after some exchanges I had with him.

My interest in a Scherer Contax, as I explained in the above link, was not to bear the Contax logo, but to learn in depht Mr Scherer's work. His price was extremely affordable to me, but the deal was politely killed upon him informing me about his year waiting list.

Why don't I buy a Contax and overhaul it myself ? For the very simple reason that my Kievs work so good, so smooth and so accurate I just don't need it. Many owners of both Contaxes and Kievs have comfirmed this at RFF.

Furthermore, when I talk about my smooth, good and accurate Kievs, I am talking about the Kievs 4AM, the hardest model to put back in shape, due to bearing several low quality parts. Older models I own, are on my own waiting list, pending my own will.

Athough being the most simplyfied and cheaper model, the 4AM is a Soviet modernization of the original pre war Zeiss Ikon model. Not only the Kiev 4AM it is not a copy, but a further improvement in many aspects.

It is we, Kiev owners, who have raised from our ranks the genious of Russ Pinchbeck and his unsurpassed Kiev Survival Site. No other camera in the world enjoys such a detailed support website, BY FAR. And by the same, it was the Kievs who inspired Russ to launch his monumental work, not the Contaxes.

It is we, Kiev owners the ones who have deeper insight about the Contax ribbs, than Contax owners themselves, due to the KSS and Maizenberg earlier work.

It is we, Kiev owners the ones whose cameras will work forever due to our own knowledge and capability to fix them, either by ourselves or by common help here at the FSU forum.

It is we, Kiev owners, from whose table crumbs Contax owners feed themselves with knowledge about their cameras and how to best use them.

It is we, Kiev owners, those who find almost nothing of interest to read at the Contax forum of RFF.

And it is we, Kiev owners who have stamped on our cameras a logo recalling the defeat of the monstrous Nazi regime.

So who is the real owner of "the real thing" ?

Our Kievs and related lens and gear have been manufactured by the millions, deep into the 80's, in contrast to the Contax whose production was betrayed and stopped more than 20 years earlier. Due to the hystorical circumstances of the Soviet plannified economy, the prices of our gear do not reflect their intrinsic value. The fact is that the more Russia today is involved by globalization, the more prices go up.

And I don't buy the story that more good Kiev gear is out of stock, although I accept that a lot of cannibalization is taking place. With such a massive production, it doesn't make much sense to me.

New owners of Kiev gear have a bright and assured future, provided they show some patience in learning Kiev disassembly, which is nothing but an issue of investing time and saving money. Contax owners, on the other hand will live forever enslaved, by their own prejudices, to the few fixers left, paying more and more money as time passes by, and the number of good Contax fixers shrinks more and more.

So let them go their dead end way, and let's us continue with ours, as time is a precious asset we badly need to ensure our cameras bright future.

Cheers,
Ruben

I"m not sure what this is all about. I own Contaxes and Kievs. I like them all, but a Kiev is a Kiev, and a Contax is a Contax and never the twain shall meet. Unfortunately my beloved Kievs are broken and my feeble rescue attempts have resulted in nothing more than a tiny pile of rubble.

Hi Steamer,

I explained very well what is all about. Your difficulties in catching it are due to the fortunate fact you own both Contax and Kiev.

Follow the KSS and your tiny pile of rubble will come alive again. Don't follow it and you will continue to live with your tiny pile of rubble.

Anyway, as you say "a Kiev is a Kiev, and a Contax is a Contax", I say "cada chancho a su rancho". After all this is what you say too.

Cheers,
Ruben

Hi Fred,
You will better help me with a comment about Kertesz "Satiric Dancer" at the Critique forum.

Hello Ruben,

You made many valid points in your OP. I admire you.:)
I will repeat something I said before. A Kiev 4,4A is an improved camera to Contax II,III and a Kiev 4M,4AM is an improved camera to a Kiev 4,4A.
J-8M,and Helios-103 are improved lenses to Zeiss Sonnar 50/2. Someone often compare a defective Kiev to a good Contax. I don't think it is fair.:)

Kind Regards

Kievuser.

sounds like ruben had some nasty emails and has decided to go public.

but if this thread turns politically nasty i will shut it down.

just sayin'...

Hi Joe,
No email got, just followed RFF postings. As for your warning, valid and timely.

Cheers,
Ruben

This is like someone seriously reviving the "Judge Carter" or "Fatty Arbuckle" controversy.

Ruben is sitting there alone late at night in the desert with too many neurons firing with too few cameras and too much coffee.

Good morining Valdemar,

After having followed you at the forum and in prived message, couldn't you try to overcome yourself and start saying intelligent things without that compulsive need for a self embarrasing start or a smashing after blow ?

For instance you could start explaining that stuff about Judge Carter and so.

Cheers,
Ruben

There is no reason for this "Us versus Them" that appears so often on the FSU forum. It is out of line and has done a lot of damage in making it an unfriendly place. If some members play this "my brand is better than yours", post pictures and not these soap-box lectures.

We, Kimosabe? ;)

I find owning both a Contax and a Kiev isn't a contradiction in terms. Except, of course, as you've put it, for those who have a strong opinion as to what "the real thing" is. To some, that's Coca-Cola.

Good luck with the new gear path; wherever it takes you.

Y recuerda: más vale solo que mal acompañado. :)

I very much agree, and precisely for this reason I coined the term "Kontax". Then I offered my hand further more, see

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=49630

and get out as I did.

Afterwards, the anti Kontax trend continued, and therefore I say today fine, no problem.

Just don't expect me to say it before cleaning the table and put things on their right place, from my viewpoint, which is no sacred gospel, but a sensible human viewpoint after all.

Now, if you don't want to read the thread in which I explained at the time the logics of using the term 'Kontax', and if you don't want to read the above link, and if you don't want to read the further disdain with which we were treated and prefer instead to blame me = that's fine with me too. Whenever you address an issue you say something about yourself too, like it or not, Brian.

While I offered to join ranchos with Contax users they thought mine is falling apart and I am begging for shelter, out of shame.

But our Kiev Ranch is beautifull, plenty of grain and we have no problem at all under its roof. That's all.
Cheers,
Ruben

Google is your friend, but, in a nutshell, "Judge Carter" is a famous man who disappeared one day in early 20th Century.

For a while, there was nothing in the American newspapers except speculation about what happened to "Judge Carter". Speculating about what happened to him was a national pastime, there were many theories and sightings for years. Almost like UFO speculation or claimed appearances of Elvis after he had died.

Nowadays, if someone discusses the "Judge Carter" controversy, it is a metaphor for bringing up an ancient event and creating a faux animosity concerning the event.

The best answer is that a Kiev is a simulacrum of a Kiev, an almost perfect reproduction of a German camera in a factory transplanted to Russia.

If you wish to call it a "Kontax" or a "Ciev" is your business. I don't feel liking either Kiev or Contax is cause for any argument or discord.

The best concept I can think of was the Russian/German camera hybrids that after WWII were engraved in Russian "To Remember" and given to Army heroes.

That's a good sentiment, maybe for you too.

Okay, I'm addressing this issue. I do not like the "Us vs Them", "Ours is better than yours", and "We know more than you" attitude of this post. It has become a Pissing Contest.

I read your post on the Contax site. You got a lot of thought-out replies.

For myself, there are cameras that I will take apart, and cameras that I send to a professional to repair. I do not use a Kiev because all three quit working after a roll of film.I found it easier to adapt the lenses for a Nikon RF, and shimmed one Nikon RF for use with Zeiss-standard lenses. I color-code the Logo of the lenses so I can tell which have been modified. I still use a Zorki 3M because I figured out how to fix the shutter from jamming; found the part that needed some help. Most of the members here do not want to do camera repair, they want to take pictures.

JDOS2 used the term "Kontax" a long time ago on this forum.

ruben dont stop using word kontax just because someone dont like it. if you like it it normal to use it. i think we should ignore other people who force us to change the way we thinking. if they dont like it they dont have to read those posts. they can always put me on ignore list.

I have a couple of Kiev 4A bodies I use with 50/2 Zeiss Sonnar lenses and Leitz 50mm auxilary finders. I wonder what terminology is appropriate for that combination.

I think that should provoke an answer from the "God-created-Adam-&-Eve-not-Adam-&-Steve"-section.
Anyway that just reminds me of "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly" by Leone where Tuco create on revolver out of 3 different ones (of course not possible!).
That would be a good thread like: Show me your Frankengear!

Hi Ruben,

carry on the good work. If you feel like Kontax then keep it. after all it's also useful, as everybody can see "Ah there's a Ruben-topic lat's watch/let's avoid it!"
My lesson learned was that it's possible to fix more yourself than you think. My father had the Film always put into the camera by the dealer. So i am a few steps ahead. Thaks to reading some of the postings and sites I was able to fix some things myself= more room as there aro no plastic boxes with disassembled cameras!

I agree with Brian. Like others who are defending their beloved Contax
you, Ruben are just promoting a camera "brand" you are attracted to.

I don't feel the slightest remorse for owning a Kiev fleet, nor for the Soviet Union having overtaken Zeiss installations after defeating the Nazi regime at WWII. This is precisely what the "Kiev" name ressembles to me, for which I am proud to display it.

BTW, it is easy to take offense in the above statement if you
know what this "overtaking" came with (Theft, rape and murder).
Using a French, American or British camera would be much more
appropriate. How about an Argus, Ruben ? :)

Carry your Kontax proudly. Fine. Let Contax users enjoy what they
like. This thread promotes what you say you are trying to fight, just like
Leica haters promote the Leica brand. Us. vs. them.

Sincerely,

Roland.

I'm sorry.

This seems to me to be a storm in a teacup. AFAIK there is no such thing as a "Kontax" in the same way as there is no such thing as a "lense".

A Contax is a Contax. A Kiev is a Kiev. The thing you put on the front is a lens. There is no room for snobbery, either direct or inverted.

Use what you have. Enjoy it. Don't argue about it. Don't apologise for it. But don't be surprised if people wince inwardly at a deliberate misnomer.

Let's get back to capturing images, eh?

Regards,

Bill

Who the heck wants a camera that you got to take apart & fix all the time? I want a camera that I can go out and enjoy myself with. Ruben it seems that every month or so you are comming out with a "I'm overhauling a Kiev thread" I must be missing something so anybody want to send me their broken Kiev? There seems to be plenty of them out there. :D Just kidding, and I'm not trying to be rude. I just don't get it.
