I just picked-up a nice brass & wood Wollensak 4x5, with a brass Wollensak compound (?) (pneumatic) shutter.

The whole kit is in wonderful shape for its age, including a two-pocket leather fitted case, a riteway 4x5 holder, and a red-rubber hose and bulb.

When I tried the shutter, i noticed that only one leaf of the shutter moved; the other stayed closed.

I removed the shutter cover, cleaned the pistons and cylinders, then tried to determine why the one shutter leaf was immobile.

This is a two-leaf shutter, both leaves share a common pivot pin at the bottom, and a second hole next to the pivot-pin, that receives the operating pin from the lever above. This operating hole as torn-away on the lower, inoperative leaf.

I really can't see of a way to repair the original leaf, by applying a "dutchman" or similar patch, since the thickness would cause binding with the mechanism... so I think my best bet is making a new leaf.

Does anyone know where I might find black, opaque "Vulcanoid" sheet ?:confused::confused:

I hope someone can come up with a source for any others of us who may have a need. I wonder if there is a plastic that might be of the right thickness and weight?
