i just got one in the mail today.
it's in great shape, for a change.

but it's a bit different. it is very big, at least the ring is very deep, way deeper than any other 40mm filter i have.
it's an orange filter and the only markings on the ring are 40 BDB.

any idea what that stands for?

rfman,

is this true?

Hey Joe,

I'm sure you saw that google brings up sweet nothing (photography wise) about 'BDB filter'...

I did find this site that mentions a certain type used for IR photography... Maybe it's of interest?

wpo-IR photography

From what little I found doing a quick search it looks like BDB is a manufacturer... there are vague ref's to filters/close-up lenses/hoods for sale. BDB was also listed under the manufacturer pull down menu at:

http://www.testreports.co.uk/photography/wdc/test-reports/Agfa.html

i think you're right, it's the manufacturer. i never would have thought that from how it's printed on the filter ring.

from that last site-
-Instruction Manual (Copy) ' BDB/SRB Filters make Pictures'

thanks.

Hi Joe, (and others?)

I found a seller on the bay - link - in hongkong that sells various 40mm filters for 1 GBP a piece. Add GBP2,79 for shipping though. Shall I order some yellow filters and ask him about this shipping thing?
I will first confirm they are coated glass filters.

Rob.

Hi Joe,
BDB were a UK maker of filters. You bought the filter rings and glass vseperately hence the thickness. Many of them are 2 part ring rather than the glass being held in with a small ring or clip.

nope, no name on it at all, just 40 BDB

Hi Rob,
This is the guy I was refering to in the other thread. He only lists UV filters. I have had an answer back fron SRB and they don't do 40's but will make a 40/40.5 or any other adapter to order. I intend to get back to them to see what size of glass they put in their 40.5 and smaller and see if they can supply glass only. These could then go in the chinese rings :D

It sure would be sweet if those 40mm UV filters on ePAY come apart easily. You may be able to slip in the glass from a 40.5 and create your own 40.

this BDB set up comes apart and screws back in easily. (after a cleaning and a drop of oil)

this would be ideal for using with other glass. unfortunately i have no 40.5 glass to try.

What colours do you want?

Hi Kim, I asked our man in China/HongKong about the glass, coating etc. If they make a stepping ring, it would be interesting to know if they manage it slim enough not to vignette... Then a 43mm or something like that might be wise.
Stu found an orange and a yellow slim Canon filter with Riz, but they are a SES: Shipping Elephants Store. Very expensive shipping: $15 to US and $50 international.
I asked them about that.
If the HongKong shop sells glass filters I think I will get some and use the thread with 39mm filter glass. Maybe cut the rest into a 'flower'shape hood! ;-)

Rob

Just read the news from Ritz, Stu tipped me about them.
I stated earlier they are a SES shop. They appear not to be a Shipping Elephants Store, they could ship me the two slim Canon filters for $10 shipping charge. Very much reasonable compared to the $50 they state on the site.
Who bought the two filters just 4 hours before I inquired?

Damn!!

Do you need both of them? :)
Rob.

Hi Rob,
I didn't buy them but I do have the slim yellow and orange/red from the 1.5 I bought. I don't really do B/W so I am not likely to use them. I don't want to sell them but I would be happy to trade them for UV's or sky's.

I had an answer from SRB, they don't do 40's but they will make a step ring to order. Not cheap though! I have sent a message to see if the can supply glass only and if so in what size. China only does UV but this could provide another method but they are not thin.

Hi Kim, those yellow and orange slim filters of yours, they are 40mm?
In that case, how can I get you UV's or skyfilters... They have to be slim too, right?

Aaargh!

Sure you don't want to sell them?

Please?

thanks, Rob.

PS. I have not heard back from China yet about filter glass and coating.

Hi Rob,
Sorry not for sale. If the worst comes to the worst I can get some UV glass and fit it to the frames. If I sell them, I lose that option.
