Speaking of the Nikon F...

The F is not a particularly complicated camera, so I don't know why it would be difficult to find somebody to work on one.

I love the F. Not only a great camera, but one of the best pieces of industrial design ever.

It's a tossup between the M4 and F for my favorite camera. But the F is my favorite SLR.

I have a black paint F with plain prism that needs repair. Poor thing.
Time to get a new one.


Does anyone know of a reliable technician who can service or overhaul an F body?

This thread got me going! I took my dear departed brother's Nikon F (1959, I think 6402199) and shot a roll of Tri-X. The negs look wonderful. That camera always puts me in graphic design mode, I guess because of that big, bright finder. I love all my cameras, but there's something very special about a Nikon F.
I think Cameraquest is doing Nikon F repairs, no?

Sover is really good. I purchased a fully rebuilt F2 from him when I was living in London. Beautiful black paint camera with a plain prism. Not cheap but a bargain, when you consider what you are getting. It's my daily shooter.



I wonder if DAG could give an F a CLA. I've seen the service manual and it's actually a fairly simple camera on the inside, which is probably why it is so darn reliable.

I impulse purchased an F2 off eBay the other day. Body + 50/2 Nikkor for $123 including shipping. Have always wanted an FTn and/or an F2, so it was irresistible at the BIN price. Now lets just hope it works!

Finding a skilled technician should not be a problem, probably more people have worked on more Nikon F's than any other camera.

The issue will be replacement parts, if needed. It is pretty much understood that the circular resistor intrinsic in the Photomic FTn and original metered F2 is no longer available, as such many of these older meters are permanently dead. A basic CLA, however, should still be reasonably accomplished.

Not so.
Sover Wong had replacement ring resistors for the F2 finders made up and does the supply and install.
When he first introduced them, he was kind enough to sell me a pair which I've squirrelled away against the day one of my DP-12s needs one.
I don't know if he'll still just sell the resistors without installing them, but if you need yours replaced and have someone locally to do the remove/re-install it might be worth it to inquire.
And for those of you using F2 drives (MD-2 or MD-3) he also has brass advance and re-wind gear replacements for the original nylon ones that are no longer available.

By FAR the absolute best source of Nikon F info is Uli Koch's Nikon F trilogy.
nothing else is even comparable, its that good.
not cheap, but worth every penny if you want the best info on the Nikon F

I was lucky enough to live only a few miles away from the late great Pete Smith, "the NikonSmith". He had over 300 Nikon F's in his repair shop alone. Sorely missed.

I enjoyed seeing the picture of Pete Smith. Did you shoot more at his shop?

BTW, I'm curious what that was shot with. It doesn't look like the usual Nikkor lens character.

Malcolm Taylor will work on the Nikon F, he has all sorts of spares too. Also, Nikon F2 expert Sover Wong will also take on F repairs and servicing...

I can't think of two better people to send your F to!

I'm not too sure if I am allowed to do this but I do have a Sover Wong serviced Nikon F for sale in the Classifieds.

A brilliant camera. Also tough as nails - the kind that one would accidently drop on the floor and worry if you've damaged the pavement rather than the camera.
