About as protected from the elements as in a Series Land Rover. Water leaks in, oil out. Toes get toasted in summer, and frozen in winter. Nice trick.

I even have a sticker with waving instructions on the dash. Now remembering to not wave when driving one of my other cars is the trick.

Alfa owners wave too.

Its easier waving at a passing vehicle, you won't risk the other part stopping for a chat, you can always drive off. Now doing the same to another pedestrian, might risk them taking contact. Risky business! 😉

Use your thumb and forefinger to form the letter "L" and hold it up to your forehead, to indicate that you're a Leica shooter.

Four suggestions in this era of impostors carrying RD1s, X100s and M9s:

1. Stop, hold hands out in front about 40mm apart, make quick short counter-rotatory movements.

2. Stop, remove jacket, insert arms in sleeves in reverse direction, make obscure small movements of hands inside jacket while squinting, grimacing and protruding tongue at various angles.

3. Stop, drop into a squat and start feeling gently the ground around your feet while looking up with eyes closed.

4. Stop, make an open pincer posture of both hands a few millimeters apart and slowly distract them while raising them up so that you are looking up at the sky, and then slowly move hands leftwards in front of your eyes while keeping the hands at the same distance apart, and staring intently straight ahead at the same level as a line joining the knuckles of the two index fingers. Suddenly drop hands and curse.

I think an "APUG" tattoo on the forehead would make you instantly recognisable and without requiring any further gestures. I can see a couple of immediate advantages. Your family would never accompany you whilst you were out shooting, thus allowing maximum freedom, and for the shrinking violets amongst us it would be possible to get made a supply of temporary, stick-on tattoos that would serve the same purpose but make re-entry to the real world a little easier.

I got a leica greeting once, some guy standing behind me, I had my M2 on my shoulder.
It consisted of a loud announcement of "LEICAAAAAA!"

He had a nice M6

I've heard of the "jeep wave". LR folks acknowledge each other as a form of communal prayer or blessing.

I wonder if any of you have ever thought of a special greeting form between analog photographers?

Yesterday I took some shots at a rallye event and a guy close to me had a Eos 33 😀 - now something like a "greeting" would be cool - (maybe not exactly "west coast", but I think classic car drivers {at least in europe} show their thumbs up - a oldtimer greeting).

What do you think? 😎

VW owners do/did something like that. Every time I did my ex-wife would just say "there's something wrong with you people." 😀

Motorcyclists nod, with a half wave, pointing toward the ground.
Pilots - once landing, seeing others pilots, wave/nod, thumbs up.*(cheated death one more time).

thumbs up, very slightly with a single nod, seems to be subtle enough for all groups,

i seem to wave or nod to anyone that i connect with, fellow drivers, camera buffs, etc.

but a Special Greeting for film users or Leica, - strikes me as funny. -
