Georgia Spencer NC May 30 N&W 611 Heading back to Roanoke Va.

Today's Roanoke Times has a map showing the route. Departure from Spencer is at 7:30am, going through Lexington, High Point, Greensboro, and Reidsville, NC. Then on to Danville, Chatam, Gretna, Altavista (which has a wonderful view of the big trestle over a large city park), Lynchburg, and Bedford, VA, arriving in Roanoke at the O. Winston Link Museum between 2:00 and 4:00pm. http://www.roanoke.com/arts_and_entertainment/topics/611/

Ignore the US 220 sign on the map, it's actually US 29.

Altavista is going to be crazy. But that will be a great shot. Rail police is already being bumped up because the NS big dogs will be on board.

Met up with Al Patterson in Spencer this morning. Got some decent shots. Always have problems with the crowds. We photographed the train leaving the yard & headed to the Yadkin River bridge. It was crowded at the bridge so we didn't get a shot. Speed of the train was quite fast so I decided to head for Thomasville. We made it to Thomasville for our last shots. Here is a video I recorded of the N&W611 rolling thru Thomasville. We tried to reach Jamestown but with the train running speeds of 50mph & us battling stoplights we missed it & called it quits & headed for some good Lexington BBQ.

Greg--you're not kidding! There's a photo up on railpix just now showing 611's arrival in Roanoke--lots of folks out railfanning!

I was great just to see 611 moving. I had missed a chance to take what was the last trip 20 years ago, so I wanted to see this.

Also managed to get some freight action in Spencer, so all in all, it was a pretty good trip.

Lexington BBQ was great. Great choice Greg. Also, found a railroad themed place in Statesville for dinner.

Still hate we didn't reach Jamestown in time. Great meeting & spending time railfanning with you. That place in Statesville, thinks it's right off I-40 where the Alexander RR crosses the Interstate. Nice shortline that runs along Iredell & Alexander counties.

Glad you had a less obstructed view than I did, Greg. Like you, I was low on gas, and couldn't really scout a decent spot, but I did fairly well.

The crowds were a mess Phil but knew it would be. Al tried to get a good shot when the train left but stupid people kept getting in the way. I think i peed off a fat woman in pink. After standing in everyones way I yelled, Hey idiots, get out of the way! She stomped by me & I got my shot. You got a pretty decent video so you did good. It was a fun day.

Thanks, Paul and Greg. I was looking at the photos in the Roanoke Times, and noticed that some idiot climbed to the top of the Virginia Rail sculpture on the Railwalk, and another was hanging onto the big crankshafts in the fountain. Crazy folks!

Most people where I was were nice enough to make sure they weren't in the line-of-sight, but you know how crowds are, when the main event comes along they all surge to the front.
