I am sorry to see this. I am also sorry to say I was under the understanding that Fred had passed away a couple years ago - somehow I got bad scoop. I tried to get in contact with the current owner of the Spiratone name some time ago with an eye towards buying it, but I was unsuccessful.
As a very young man, I used to enjoy reading Shutterbug when it was a newsprint-like tabloid and Spiratone's ads were in every issue. I have since discovered that some of their products were actually quite decent quality, although they tended to focus on the low-end price-wise.

A poignant passing indeed. I loved the Spiratone catalogs and ads. The merchandise I purchased or acquired from them was always at least very good, sometimes great.
