Split rings for straps
Traditionally these were circular on screw thread cameras.
They were small, around 12mm diameter?
If so anyone know of a supplier of good quality split rings of the appropriate size preferably in the UK?

Too many cameras....
Amazon UK - look for split rings for key rings etc. You will find those made of flat metal as well as round wire. You could also try a locksmith if any are open under pandemic restrictions or on-line locksmith suppliers meanwhile.

Wouldn't it make sense to get brass rather than stainless-steel split rings, as the latter will eventually wear through brass, aluminum or magnesium top case strap lugs?

You can buy them by the sack full on eBay; not sure of the quality, but unless you're swinging your camera around your head like a bola, I wouldn't be too worried.
There's also one account selling military surplus brass split rings of the right diameter which look interesting, but I'm not sure how suitable they are for camera straps: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/British-...-12mm-Denim-BDs-WLA-Overalls-etc/233204369490

I have found that yacht chandlers have a good selection of sizes and styles in stainless.

McMaster-Carr in the US has brass, but minimum OD is 3/8". Not sure if this is too large:

I don't think all split rings are the same. I had one work itself off my camera from a Luigi strap, resulting in my M6 with 90mm Elmarit dropping onto the stone courtyard of a French chateau. A heat attack moment requiring a stiff cognac in a nearby cafe. A dent at the rewind knob end and a bent lens hood. It still worked and a professional check out on my return home showed that no important damage had been done. Now I only use Domke straps (non-swivel) and have had no further accidents of this nature.

Some metals, like brass, are obviously softer and can 'pull' under load.
If you had a chrome 90 mm late Elmarit M it weighs about the same as five ltm cameras...

Don’t know about the UK but here in the US I pick mine up at the local hardware. They have a bunch in different sizes right next to where they cut keys.

YES +2 on this !
I also had a split ring come loose but I noticed early enough before it worked it's way out completely. I went for ss fishing rings, which are a pain to open and mount but they will never come off or wear out.

I've had one start to work itself loose l, too. Caught it. Now I put heat shrink tube on them to secure. Seems to work but is fiddly to do.

I get mine from amazon, huge selection of sizes. I've also gotten them from Michaels Craft store as well as sporting goods outlets.
