call me american... but how exactly does he plan to trip the shutter holding the camera like that? lol roll his hand upwards?

Yes, its a S2.

I presume he'll move his thumb to trip the shutter.

But, why is he using a 13.5cm w/o a VF? Guess he's good (or naive).

I use my thumb to trip the shutter that way too. It's less stressful for my shooting (right) hand.

Also, I could imagine using the RF spot as a close estimate for a 135 frameline. If your subject is distant and going to be in the center of the frame anyway, it shouldn't matter too much.

Good points. 😎

only problem is that the subject wasnt distant at all, he was shooting the woman accompanying him (looked to be his daughter) on this trip. with the island edge in the background

it looks like an S3 or S4 from the non rotating SS dial, not an SP as there is no frame selector dial under the rewind crank. if his hand was not covering most of the frame counter dial, it could be narrowed down to one specific model.

yes, I would say it is a Japanese home favorite, an S4, as it looks like a manually set frame counter dial.

we ( I) are sick, to Sherlock Holmes a pic of a tourist with a camera, on a Saturday night even!

No you are not. It is a Nikon S4, about 5,500 made. About 10% or so of those have distance scales in feet. He has an external mount lens, so I could not tell. Mine is in feet.

here is another one from the same ferry ride, if that helps any. still a lot covered up..

also - FTR - both were shot with a Canon 1Ds and 70-200mm f/2.8L ( non IS ) on a boat, and me.. with no sea legs lol. it wasn't terribly easy to get sharp imaged unfortunately lol

Rangefinders are such handsome instruments...we don't often get to see pictures of people shooting them in profile (there's also Joe's avatar which is cool as well). To see something relatively small handled with care and precision is a pleasant sight.
