I read this in yesterday's NYT -- very interesting indeed. Maybe not all that different than visiting Tombstone, Arizona or perhaps Civil War reenactments in the US?

Quite interesting indeed. Entrepreneur at its best. They use a market that is already there, photographer get the pictures they want and the county get some money. On other places rural areas are being trampled by tourist and don't get anything in exchange. So cheers for them.

In the 70’s people there were thin as rails subsisting on rice and vegetables. By the 90’s there were billboards on the side of highways in Shanghai advertising weight loss plans. Now they need to manufacture nostalgia that was reality mere 30 years ago.

If this is what tourism becomes reduced to (taking photos to show off to other people to incite travel jealousy), at least this is somewhat low-impact compared to bulldozing / gentrifying these remote lands or interfering too much / hassling the locals.
