I got a cheap Pentax Spotmatic, but it has a stain in the focusing screen. It is more of an annoyance than a functionality-breaker, and I have information on how to tear it apart to clean.

But maybe it is too much trouble to clean.

Were these cameras prone to getting focus screen stains?

Were there quicker ways to deal with it than tearing the top off?

Thanks in advance

It depends on whether it is on the top or the bottom. If it is on the underneath you may be able to access it through the lens opening. Otherwise the top cover will need to come off etc.

Japanese fresnel screens can be made of soft plastics indeed. I would not use any alcohol near it, I know this from bitter experience. A dust and gentle blow with a puffer, followed by very gentle swabbing with something like a strip of lens cleaning tissue or cotton tip and a little de-mineralised water would be my recommendation to avoid doing more harm than good.
Cheers
Brett
