Stand development, help me identify what went wrong

Hello.

Last week I tried stand development for the first time (Delta 100 , 60min total with 30min inversion, 1/100 rodinal).

After scaning my neg I noticed that all pictures were dirty.

Here's an example:

Is this dust?
I used my rocket blower to clean the neg but it didn't help.

I also used ilfostop and ilford rapid fixer.

Looks either like schmutz in the water or dust to me. When film is in solution, its gelatin coating is very soft. If there is foreign matter in the water, it can easily lodge in the gelatin and when the film drys, "bing" you've got permanent grit as part of your image. Ditto for the drying process; film will hold dust that is in the air and that comes into contact with film as it is drying. I use water from my dehumidifier for development (more or less like distilled water) and then run it through a screen filter to get rid of dust. For drying, I built a cabinet to protect the drying film from air currents. I have also dried film by hanging it in a bathroom, which tends to have less dust and higher humidity than the rest of the house.

[Edit: by the way, I don't think that this is a problem inherent to stand development, unless implicit in your question is that the development method is the only difference in your processing for this particular roll of film and that you have controlled for all other variables.]

Might be calcium in the water. also, I had similar results with Delta100 and Rodinal 1:100... There's a lot of calcium in the tap water here as well.

In the end, I abandoned Delta100 because I did not want to give up the ease of use of using tap water and Rodinal 1:100.

I also use water from my dehumidifier.
You are correct, the development method was the only difference.
I never had this problem with Delta 100 and a normal development method, even if I use tap water.

Maybe there was something in the tank that I didn't notice was there before I loaded the film.
I processed two rolls of delta 400 in the same tank after this and they are both fine (normal development).

I guess that with stand development it could be stuff precipitating out of the water during the stand time, whereas in normal development it was kept suspended with the agitation. While you can use Rodinal when it is decades old if your Rodinal is old and has gone dark it may be worth filtering it to see if there is any crap in it, like the hard crystalline stuff that can accumulate around the cap.
