See this article - Apple Australia is reported to have increased its standard warranty from 12 months to 24 months from date of purchase, to comply with 2011 changes to Australian consumer law.

Macbooks will be covered by the new period 'within weeks'. iPhones are already covered, according to the article.

This could mean that AppleCare only buys you an extra 12 months warranty, to cover year 3.

Given the nature of the changes in 2011 to the Trade Practices Act, Im sure you could already enforce the 24 month warranty period. Not so much with Apple, but there have been a number of instances over the last 18 months where retailers that have refused to address a defective product outside of the "official" warranty period have changed their mind by merely being presented with a printed copy of the new Act...

According to the local news, shop staff are instructed to not mention the better warranty conditions unless asked.
