If you are in downtown Detroit in the near future, I have 30 or so pictures up at Stella Cafe (no relation) and Rowland Cafe, both in the Guardian Building. Primarily Van Dykes and cyanotypes, with a few conventional prints thrown in. Mostly pictures of Europe.

The architecture of the building is very interesting if you haven't seen it.

Have a great holiday,
Dante

Would love to see them ... a little far to travel though sorry! 😀

Love your site by the way. 🙂

Can't make your exhibit - too far. But yours is one of the best sites on gear and photography. Thank you for your efforts.

One of Dante's cyanotypes, nicely framed, was my son's holiday present this year. He is so pleased with it - an ethereal panorama of Detroit's central depot. Another Stella cyanotype - a woman in silhouette - is in my living room. Well worth it to see his work, imho.

wish i could go....Love Your Site
so I would probably be Smitten with your Work

Congrats !!
may all your Prints have a Red Dot.... May All be Sold !

Hi Dante, for most of us Detroit is too far away, but why don't you document your exhibition in your web pages ? BTW, have you opened a bookstore, or is the cover photo a practical joke?
Buon anno !

Hi Marek:

It's a practical joke... that's a big used bookstore in town (King's, with something like 1.5 million books now), and my son is sitting in the second-floor command seat (usually occupied by an older man).

I'll get something onto my site; the problem is that prints on flat paper don't scan well; maybe I'll flip the internegatives and try it.

Best,
Dante

Cale, at least through the end of January... King it is. I used to go there Saturday mornings with my dad when I was younger, and we'd hit lunch at Lafayette Coney Island.

D

Looks like John K. King Books on Lafayette. One of my favorite places on Earth.

Dante, how long will the show(s) run? We might be in Detroit early-Feb. and would love to check them out.

Some nice shots, especially the one with birds - looks like taken in Italy. However on screen the logic for printing them in blue is not obvious... (Are these cyanotypes?) It looks like you must be an architect in your "normal" life...

kz, it's just the standard process. The folks who sell the Process II told me that the "new" cyanotype process is essentially just a more concentrated form of the old one (which they also sell) combined with some very aggressive self-marketing by Mr. Ware.

In terms of getting deep blues, discard the conventional wisdom about gently drying coated paper and using high-blocking pigment inks. Think toward brutality and BCI-8. Modern inkjet inks, even dye ones, seem to have high blocking potential and can totally block UV at relatively low apparent densities.

I'm not a chemist or a physicist, but I would observe that the self-styled experts on this process are directing people to methods that are almost guaranteed to cause the pigment to wash out (or not to expose).

Best,
Dante

Dante those cyanotypes are gorgeous! Are you using the newer cyanotype printing method, or the older version? I can't get my blues as rich.

I've just looked at the building on Google Street view; wow, I need to go to Detroit - unfortunately, it's unlikely (the actual likelihood, as we say in the business, is 'approaching zero') that I'll make it while the exhibition is still on.

Outstanding work, and I agree completely about the process. I have chemical training and can explain several reasons why what you've observed occurs.
