stick on soft release?

I was thinking of sticking on one of those plastic stoppers on the shutter as its the perfect diameter for the shutter button... might want to try that (& cheap too).

I have never understood the concept of a 'soft release.' Can someone explain it? I have several laying around for Ms, but other than changing the angle of the index finger, none made the release 'soft.'

I lov'em. Allows, for me more control and the ability to be more gentle with the shutter which I think gets me another stop for free.

I had one on my NEX7, I didn't like it at all, the foamy tape made it a bit wobbly, so keeping my finger on it was a bit distracting. Also, it fell off and was lost after about a week.

I use a leather dot I trimmed from leather tennis grip as a stick on soft release on cams that don't have the threads. Not as good as the real soft release on a threaded bodies but improves handling greatly by raising the contact height of my shutter.
