Well, I have decided to take the challenge of fixing my Canonet's sticky shutter myself. This is a big step for me, as my DIY repair experience consists of light seals and cleaning the RV/VF of the Canonet. I've searched for instructions on how to get to the shutter blades but couldn't find much. Any diagrams floating around or pictures with instructions? I'm clueless and a bit nervous!

hello, i've done this before, its not difficult .
With the good tools, you can remove front lens in twoo minutes .
I try here to give you informations

You have to remove the 27- 8639 ring , for this you can use a spanner or make your own tool like this one :

take care, thereis a mistake on this picture - 45,3 mm is the internal diameter, not external !!!!!

After removing the ring , you can easyly remove the plastic part 19-0580 and the part 13 - 9293

Now you just have to remove the front element and for this you need a special tool :

If you don't use this tool, the lens will come in two pieces and you must use the alternativ method (see after )!

After this, you can acces the shutter and clean it with ronsonol 😛

Alternativ technics exist but it's most difficult , long and delicate ^^:

Last spring I got more experience than I ever imagined by tearing down the front of the lens assembly to repair a stuck shutter and a jammed shutter speed control.

The front most lens element came out easily with a spanner wrench. The middle lens group was a bit tricky, carefully drilling a couple small holes so the spanner would grip and unscrew it. Once the lens elements were out, a bit of Ronsonol on a Q-tip did the trick. All it seemed to need was just a tiny bit of Ronsonol and some exercise. It's worked just fine ever since. Another problem on mine was that somebody had forced the shutter speed ring, bending the little tab on it. I was able to carefully un-bend it and once it was all put back together it worked just fine.

What was surprising was that the shutter had been sitting in the cocked position for who knows how long. Once I started to massage the shutter blades with the Q-tip, the blades started to move slowly and then all of a sudden >>CLICK<< the shutter fired and actually startled me! 🙂

If you need any advice, just ask here and you will get more than you ever imagined. 🙂

Wow, thanks!

I was fiddling with the cam this morning before seeing this and decided to check the self-timer on a whim, as I heard they were notorius for jamming the shutter. It looked completely normal and unengaged, but I put a little pressure on it to make sure, and lo and behold the shutter works again! I feel pretty silly as it's been sitting on my shelf "broken" for several months. I will defnitely bookmark this page should it truly go south on me in the future.

Hi everyone,

This is an old thread so I hope I get some sort or response 😛

Anyhows, I bought a Canonet off eBizzle recently. GIII, QL17. It's in pretty decent condition - meter works, aperture blades adjust, etc.

Pressing the shutter elicits no response. Reading through the threads on this site I guess I have the sticky shutter problem.

I'd like to try the Ronsonol on the shutter blades. Looking at the diagrams, I see how the front of the lens barrel is set up. I just don't understand where you guys are getting/making the tools to unscrew the different parts. To my understanding, a spanner is an adjustable wrench. How in heck are you using a big fat wrench to get out the tiny little rings?

Outlining the access of the shutter blades from the front of the lens in detail would be really, really helpful. I'm pretty handy with random things like building model airplanes and soldering circuitry, so even though I've never really handled this camera, I'm willing to try it out 😛

To recap:
1. Tools?
2. Detailed process by which the tools are used?

Thanks... 🙄

I know that in the UK and Europe, you call some big wrenchs a "spanner", but what we're talking about is a small two-prong instrument for doing precision work. I'm sure I posted some photos of some work with it. I'll search and try to find the thread.

The spanner I have came from a co-worker and it's unbranded and looks like it may have been made in a machine shop. There are no marks or model numbers or anything on it.

If you search here you will find it. I wrote up quite a bit of it here when I finally got mine working. I need to run to a hair appointment now, but I'll be back in a couple hours and I can search for some of my old posts.

Hi,
Lens spanners come in various shapes and sizes and are nothing like you are thinking about. http://www.micro-tools.com/store/SearchByCategory.aspx?CategoryCode=SPN
A much cheaper alternative is to grind down the tips of a pair of long nosed pliers so the tips will fit in the grooves.
You may aso need a set of lens rings or bungs. Again these can be adapted from items in the hardware store. http://www.micro-tools.com/store/SearchByCategory.aspx?CategoryCode=LNS

As to instructions try here: http://www.kyphoto.com/classics/articles.html

Ah, I see... and these spanners have to be pointy enough to fit into the tiny grooves to unscrew them...

Yikes. 🙁

Thanks for the clarification, I will continue debating whether this project is for me!
