Still waiting ... for an OMD to appear in the classifieds.

One thing I've noticed about all these new camera releases is the rapidity with which they start to appear in the classifieds from the time they go on to the market.

I realise that this is part of the way we try new things these days ... we buy them and if we don't like them we sell them for an accepted loss and we move on and I'm as guilty as anyone. I don't tend to do it with cameras but when I was into motorcycles they flowed through my hands like sand! :p

But why no OMDs so far? ... because in reality it's just another camera which will meet expectations in some areas and not in others for many new owners! Maybe the short supply in many areas has something to do with it but thinking back to the X100 release and the supply problems after the tsunami they still started appearing very quickly on the used market.

walking the streets of Adelaide, i was approached by a foreign student who wanted to buy my OMD hanging around my neck....he walked away disappointed.

I would never do that. When I am interested in a camera, I buy it from Amazon. They have a no questions asked return policy. So I just return it. No loss. I guess if you have too long, then you are stuck. I am very careful about it.

So, are you saying you buy a camera from Amazon just so you can check it out, without actually intending to keep it? Then you return it after you've satisfied your curiousity?

I just got word that my OMD (black) with 12-50 lens is on its way from Amazon and should arrive on Wed. I doubt you will see it in the classifieds but you may see my GX1 if all the hype is true. I am leaving for San Francisco that Sat. and will take both for a shakedown and comparison.
I can't wait and 2 days is not much time for familiarization with the OMD.

From everything I have been reading on the web, the OMD is a great success. Demand still far outreaches the supply, though it is getting better. I believe we see a lot of "newer" equipment for sale, because the purchaser does not fully grasp what he/she has bought. Maybe got in over their head. Or, they just don't like it. I think it'll be quite awhile before an OMD shows up in the classifieds.

No I buy it with every intention of keeping if I like it, if I don't, good bye. The other way, IMHO, would be unethical, eh?
Also I often keep something for years and then sell it here.

I rang Camera Pro in Brisbane yesterday to check on the current availability of the battery grip and the young salesman who answered the phone was quite chatty. Like me he had been a little prejudiced towards MFT but has changed his mind since the release of the OMD. The camera, aside from it's obvious popularity, seems to be doing a lot for micro four thirds generally.

I also wonder how many sales are going to customers who are taking their first steps into MFT and aren't about to abandon it readily until they have explored it's possibilities.

My theory is that it's just a really good camera with low initial expectations. The x100 and x-pro1 were and will always be compared to leicas - from which they're quite different, so it's to be expected we'd see a lot change hands on this forum in particular.

The om-d is definitely the camera that the e-p1 should have been though - the original promise of 4/3 and now m4/3 has finally been realized with this camera, and olympus are reaping the rewards of taking a risk and getting it right. We'll see more high end stuff coming in the future too, as I think they've finally worked out that the real money is in halo products, not dime-a-dozen consumer cams.

I was thinking that could have fair bit to do with it ... plus a lot of the ones owned on this forum are owned by fairly hard core OM fans! :p

1. Not so according to the poll I created before OM-D launched.

2. Not all OM fans are OM-D fans. I find it strange, but that's how it seems.

Well, If we can all be honest and recognize why a longtime OM user might not see the legacy in this camera.
The OMD is not really very much like an OM aside from styling.
More like a Well refined Pany G1 (the original m4/3).
The badge might say "Olympus" and the letters "OM" appear as well.
I'm not knocking the camera in any way. I think it's a great offering from Olympus and look forward to trying one out.
Now If the shutter dial was around the lens mount and aperture ring on the front edge of system lenses .... ;)

1) Just checked eBay... surprisingly no used examples there. This, as I recall is one of the few camera's out as shortly as it has been that didn't turn up used on eBay within a couple of weeks to a month.

2) I pulled out my black OM-1 with grip and took all the measurements and a picture and compared them to the EM-5 when pics and specs started showing up. I have been using 4/3 and m4/3 since the Evolt E-300 (my first) and once I saw the OM-1 w/grip compared to the EM-5, determined to have the EM-5 as soon as they started showing up used. Could it be that will never happen?
My choice is 60% legacy styling and 40% improvements over the latest PEN. I love my OM's styling and handling from the first OM I bought in 1972.

3) Regarding the shutter ring around the base of the lens. I have half a dozen OM bodies. One is jammed, so think I will scavenge the shutter speed ring off the body and find some non-intrusive way to mount it on the front of the EM5. That'll make some eyes go wide when they see it and catch the implication, even though false.:D

I don't think the OM-D fails at anything it promised. The X100 and XPro-1 'fail' at not being Leicas (they don't really, but a lot of folks buy them expecting a M9), but more specifically they're quirky, AF is much slower than the OM-D on both, and the XP-1 doesn't (IMO) live up to its claims to beat last-gen full-frame.
