Every lens I own, FSU and Nikon, has the distances marked in regular metre increments: 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, infinity or something similar.
I have just noticed that on a single 26M the distances are marked in f-stop metre increments: 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, etc to infinity. Is this normal? Also, what could be the practical use of such markings?

Praktical use... maybe to confuse the distance scale for the apertures, I don't really know. I found this topic.

I also have one, it's been suggested that it may have been to simplify the engravings. I find it irritating and I can't see any practical use.

I guess that would make some sense - only one set of dies.

I have seen it occasionally, and one of my Lubitels has also that unnusual distance scale. One can live with that, IMHO.
