Hi,

some guy from Moscow is selling a J-3 with a strange aperture ring on eBay: auction link

All the J-3s I know have the aperture ring near the front lens, this one apparently has a longer one, and no markings for f1.5 on the DOF scale. Could have been hacked up at some point for all I know. Has anyone seen a J-3 like this before?

Philipp

I haven't seen none like that before, but then I haven't seen a lot of J3's. The same seller has a normal looking one listed at the bottom of that page for a more reasonable $50.

I have seen this before. The thing that puzzled me was the little knob next to the screw mount.

Leon is good to buy from, BTW.

I agree.. I bought a turrent finder from him and had it in hand 9 days later..

A Minsk?

I'm not so familiar with J-3s but most are from Zagorsk and I don't this is one of those. Maybe the J-3 came with more variation than most lenses.
Dark Avenger's database may come in useful here!!

Looks like from Zagorsk (ZOMZ) but old one. This lens left production line in 1957. Doesn't look like from Valdaisk (they started J-3 line in the end of 70s)and definetely not from KMZ (KMZ stoped production in 1954).

Hi !
May I add that there is noo need to put DOF markings for f:1.5 as there is NO DOF ...at 1.5 the markings will be so close apart that it is the same thing to put a thick distance mark instead of the fine one the lens has.
Why do not ask the seller ? He is answering promptly generally. ?

Princelle identifies the maker as "Optek" but doesn't give any additional information. The sample illustrated in his book is dated 1956 while the one for sale is serialed as 1957. However, the illustrated one in Princelle's book does include the DoF scale for f/1.5 as well as an aperture setting for f/1.5. It's just my opinion but I'd be careful of this one as it appears to have Jupiter-3 markings on the front ring but the body may be from a Jupiter-8 as it's only marked for f/2 max aperture.
