Streaks on Rollei Pan 25

I have feint vertical streaks on the attached scan. It is a 6x9 neg developed in Rodinal 1:25 for 7mins 20C following a 3 min prewash. Agitation was constant for 30 secs and then 5 secs every 30 secs thereafter. I only agitated with a vertical shake or inversion. Perhaps the odd twist to give horizontal currents in the developer might help? Or perhaps less frequent agitation? Any comments gratefully received.

My guess is that your problems comes from your agitation scheme. I have done things as per Ansel Adams suggestion:

"I grasp the tank and lid firmly, and as I invert it, I give it a twisting motion so that it is both inverted and rotated. I go through this movement about twice in about 5 seconds (I consider this the ideal agitation period) at the appropriate intervals."

- The Negative, pp 213-215. He calls this a "torus" pattern. He also gives the interval, 5 seconds every 30 seconds up to 10 minutes of agitation. Try this and see if it works better.

What you see on the negative you have is called "bromide drag", as far as I understand it.

Best book I ever read --"The negative". I really ought to have a copy of my own. I am always a bit reticent at setting up horizontal currents by using the twister supplied with the dev tank. I have had horizontal banding in the past. Ansel's method sounds like a happy medium.
Hours of work in PS with curves contrast and history dodge and burn brushes were needed to make a printable version. I even tried making an inverted layer(negative image) to balance up the zebra effect. If anyone has a photoshop fix please let me know since I have more negs to print from this film. I attach my result.

Yeah, those three books (The camera, The negative and The print) were for some reason the first books about photographic techniques I bought, about 8 years ago. They're long in the tooth now, much of the product specific information is outdated, but the general ideas, formulas and many, many tips are valid and they're still the only books I have. Today I'd probably buy Les Mclean's Creative Black & White Photography or Way Beyond Monochrome by Ralph W. Lambrecht and Chris Woodhouse.

Five to 7 inversions in 5 sec or two with rotation will eliminate the streaks.

In other words, just increase agitation to break up flow more. That's basically what others are saying, too. And what I say.

My landscapes are never thet nice, but I dont get streaks, crinkle marks, but no streaks.

I omit presoak, and use 1:50, quick twirl at beginning and then a twirl when I remember, - i.e. not terribly often. I empty the tank 20% earlier than Agfa (or other) recommends and then let it soak in water for 5 minutes and then use a plain fix. If it is night photo, I use 1:100.

Wish I could do the scenery and not get the crinkles, sorry about your problems, hope you sort them soon.

Thanks for confirming it's simply a matter on increased agitation during my 5 secs periods. The photo was taken in Connemara and looks towards Mweel Rea mountains.

Sorry I did not detect it immediately...

The Ilford processing chart which includes times for Rodinal says 'A prewash is not recommended as it can cause uneven development.'

Do you need a prewash?
