Street Photography Contest - Deviant Art - Chris Weeks- CameraQuest

I would participate in this, but due to the terms of service making it so that I'm allowing DA a royalty-free license to anything I submit, it would conflict with the exclusivity agreement I have with istockphoto.com If deviantart were to either get rid of the license grant to DA, or allow for memebers to turn it off then I would participate.

iStockphoto is royalty-free, anyone can submit images. What was your point with the DA photo contest? You could only submit one image.

If you are an 'exclusive' member on istockphoto, you cannot participate on any other royalty-free site or offer royalty-free licenses to anyone else except thru istock, in exchange for the exclusivity bonus.

If I submit an image to deviant art as per DA's submission policy....

3. License To Use Artist Materials. As and when Artist Materials are uploaded to the deviantART Site(s), Artist grants to deviantART a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to do the following things during the Term:
a) to prepare and encode Artist Materials or any part of them for digital or analog transmission, manipulation and exhibition in any format and by any means now known or not yet known or invented;
b) to display, copy, reproduce, exhibit, publicly perform, broadcast, rebroadcast, transmit, retransmit, distribute through any electronic means (including analog and digital) or other means, and electronically or otherwise publish any or all of the Artist Materials, including any part of them, and to include them in compilations for publication, by any and all means and media now known or not yet known or invented ;
c) to modify, adapt, change or otherwise alter the Artist Materials (e.g., change the size) and use the Artist Materials as described in Section 3(b); and
d) the right to sublicense to any other person or company any of the licensed rights in the Artist Materials, or any part of them, subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement.
e) Artist acknowledges that Artist will not have any right, title, or interest in any other materials with which Artist Materials may be combined or into which all or any portion of Artist Materials may be incorporated.
f) During the Term, deviantART's licenses under this Agreement include the right to use any part of the Artist Materials in the promotion, advertising or marketing of the DeviantART Sites.
g) As used in this Agreement, the term "Artist Materials" means any content uploaded to the deviantART Site(s) which may include without limitation Artist's name(s) (including professional names), trademarks, trade names, likenesses, photographs, biographical materials, artwork, liner notes, and other graphical or textual materials and any and all "skins," computer-generated images or other artwork or images that Artist submits to deviantART.
4. Name and Likeness. Artist also grants to deviantART:
a) a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use Artist's name(s), group name, photograph and/or likeness(es) and biographical materials in connection with the distribution, exploitation, promotion, marketing and advertising of the Artist Materials, and the deviantART Site(s)as described hereunder, during the Term;
b) Artist also agrees not to assert against deviantART any privacy, publicity, moral or similar rights held by Artist and on behalf any other person(s) whose name(s), photographs and/or likeness(es) and/or performances are embodied in the Artist Materials. Artist also agrees that any persons other than Artist appearing recognizably or otherwise in Artist Materials will not assert of any privacy, publicity, moral or similar rights) under the laws of the United States and any other country in connection with the exploitation of the materials as described in this Agreement; and,
c) To the extent that the Artist Materials contain the name(s), group name, photograph and/or likeness(es) and biographical materials of any other person, Artist hereby grants to deviantART a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive license to use them in connection with the distribution, exploitation, promotion, marketing and advertising of the Artist Materials, as described in this Agreement, during the Term.

The bolded part presents the problem if I want to submit anything for show on DA or submit for contest. (For me at least, and all others who are exclusive on istock)

The votes still being counted

The votes still being counted

Announcing the winner is delayed by

1) getting all the votes in and tablulated
2) Chris Weeks recovering from his exclusive of Britney Spears at a Las Vegas New Year's Party.

I think the winner will be known in a couple of weeks.

I just read Week's Street Photography for the Purist while in the middle of scanning several hundred negs...

While I admire and respect his photography, I think he loses significant credibility due to the cocky tone of his prose (even though I generally concur with what he's saying). And I'm just not sure what the point of all those liberally sprinkled f-bombs might be.

I guess he refers to is as raw... I see it (the attitude and f-bombs) as completely unnecessary (if not uncalled for) and think that it becomes too much of look at me (Weeks) that ultimately detracts from photographs and the otherwise informative and inspirational message.

I don't know... maybe it's an LA thing and I just don't get it...

Am I all wet?

I read the article and looked at the photos. He writes like a foul mouthed teenage prat, and I didn't see any particularly great photos by him, nor any great revelations concerning "street photography".

He seems very well pleased with his own ability to guesstimate exposure and distance, and he feels that he's on a far higher plane than "fondlers" and "rich dentists".

I guess it's easy to be Spanky in a small self-admiration society. (He-man Wimmin Hater's Club)

guys, you are certainly entitled to your less than flattering views of Weeks, but there are few things you might not know about him. even if you dislike him, spending that much time writing about street photography and then organizing and overseeing a street photography contest is not a bad thing.

First off, he is fairly successful at what he does. Weeks can make more money in one day than from his celebrity pics than most pro photogs make in a year. Ditto occasionally from one day stock sales.

His stock file is over 3,000,000 images. He adds 300,000 to 400,000 images a year.

SFAIK, Weeks is the only major celebrity photog film shooter left in Los Angeles. He shoots Leica M's for his personal work and when the job allows, EOS when SLR required. When shooting on the red carpet with his M, other shooters have actually asked him "what's that?".

His writing style is one thing, but in person Weeks is personable and likable, with a predictably quick wit. And yeah, as you might have guessed, he is a friend. We have coffee about once a week in the Starbucks jungle.

i actually like his attitude, i dont know him, never have met him, but have communicated to him in email and he seems like a really nice guy even though he does use the f word alot...actually it makes me smile when he uses it... 🙂

Well, there is commercial papparazi photography, and there is "fine art".

There's occassionally a crossover between the two, but, granted, a good celebrity photo can bring in the megabucks. But a celeb snap is not the same to me as an "art" photo. (I know this is basically indefinable)

Strictly judging from what I have seen, I wouldn't use him for an assignment, and until the early 1990's I published and/or edited numerous major magazines, employing the likes of Helmut Newton and many others.

No photographer I knew at the time used such a juvenile "f-you" laden writing style, and I doubt I would have dealt with someone who did. He comes off to me like a big pantsload.

Having said that, it takes all kinds.

* 300,000 - 400,000 images per year? That's 1000+ exposure per day, and that's only the self-edited ones. That's a heap big amount of shootin', Je ne sais pas?

weeks also takes the time to sort of mentor young shooters. one of my friends is lucky enough to have him as a friend. He is extremely supportive of young creative talent.
