Your question seems to imply that using one is somehow breaking the rules or somehow not fair. In my opinion, there are no "rules" to the game that must be adhered to when street-shooting, so using a cable-release if it helps you get the shots you want is fine.

I have never used one, but thinking of using it. Just can see that it might be perceived as a bit creepy.
