I really liked the work MatthewM. With the picture of the Carnegie Deli and Katz's I'm getting hungry - have to get lunch now. Bye.

i agree that proximity can make a lot of difference when it comes to 28mm and people. it's not a lens i use much unless i am really a part of what i am photographing.

Thanks! There's plenty of really beautiful work here on this thread. Makes me want to get another GRDIII and shoot with it... Miss that little guy. 🙂

I also miss Katz's Deli. I had never been to NY but last August I went with my wife and her parents and I had seen Katz's on Food Network and had to go. I'm glad I did. I just wish I could go back.

Enjoy!!

So for those of you who like to shoot 28mm, what lenses (if any) do you like to pair it with? A quick 50? 35mm? I love shooting portraits, but for most other things I find 50 can be a bit long.

Personally with my OM-4, I carry a 28, 35 and 50. I usually default to the 28 or 35. There's not a ton of difference between the two, but for environmental portraits, the 35 does a great job. Also, a lot of times, I just take the OM-4 + 28 and then throw a P&S in the bag beside it (Fuji Klasse with 38mm lens or Konica BM300 with a 35mm lens.

I just picked up a couple of Olympus rangefinders and have every intention of using one of those as my second camera when I'm out with the OM-4.

For what it's worth, I used to shoot with a 50mm lens almost exclusively because I always considered the 28/35 options too wide. Now, though, I find myself reaching for the 35 99% of the time. I do like to do the one camera, one lens thing from time to time though and will experiment with the 28 by itself. But I almost never shoot above 50mm. Occasionally, I'll shoot with an 85mm lens.

I use a Canon 5D with a 35/1.4 and 85/1.8 when I shoot weddings or an 85/1.8 with extension tubes when I shoot food, but that's the only time. Otherwise, I'm going wider.

But, again, the 28/35/50 is my little grouping of lenses with my OM-4. And it all tucks away quite nicely in a Scaramanga satchel with a Domke 3-section insert. 😀

I seldom use the 28 for streetshooting. However, sometimes I force myself to use it as a refreshing exercise.

The 28mm is a wonderful focal length that I enjoy using.

It's nice to see this 28mm work. I recently (just this week) traded my D700 and all my Nikon gear for a 5D mkII and went with primes...just a 28 and an 85. I've been a 35 shooter forever, but the new field of view is exciting...I began to realize that much of my 35 work was shot from the same distance and angle, and had a certain predictability to it that began to bore me.

The 28 is a new challenge for me, and it's invigorating. I know it's only 8mm, but now I'm looking in the corners more, and REALLY concentrating on horizons.

I'm even enjoying the negative space.

5D2, EF 28/2.8 lens, Nik SilverEfex Pro 2 for the conversion:

I only have 28mm and 50mm for my Leica. I feel like it's all I need. I don't really want another focal length.

Yeah I've basically had the same progression. though I did learn to shoot film on a 24mm, and had success with it. My first lens on a leica was a 90mm, but I shot one roll with it and realized that I would rarely need a 90. My plan was to get a 50 next, to replace my use of the Nikon FE (great camera but I prefer rangefinders), but I think I may get a 35 instead.

The last 28mm lens that I owned which I liked was the Kobalux. It was tiny, had a great finder and was just amazing. After I found 21mm I didn't really look back to 28mm that much except when I had my RD1 and then my M8. I used the CV Ultron 28 f/1.9 and while it was a good lens, it never really caught with me. Don't get me wrong, it was very sharp, a great optic, it was just too big I guess.

While they aren't quite "street" shots, here are a few taken with my Kobalux on my M2 with a Tom A rapidwinder.
