Stripped battery cover?

I was given a Yashica Electro 35 GT and when trying to open the battery compartment the cover just spins.

It seems to make one and a bit turns, then a little pressure, a small click and repeat cycle.

Do I have any options or is this now a manual camera?

You can remove the bottom plate to see what is going on.

After soaking the screws that hold the bottom plate on with WD-40, they're still stuck

add a little heat to the screw-heads then try
some cameras had a small bit of adhesive to lock screws in place
stopping us from poking around camera innards.

With the bottom off I can now easily push the battery cover off. When I put the battery cover back on, and then try to unscrew it, it's back to the first post.
Can I soak it in something or some other tip to try? I don't mind taking the bottom off to change the battery, it's how I load film in some of my cameras

If the battery cover is truly stripped. You may be best to glue it in place while you have the bottom removed and then simply access the battery as you describe.
A lithium 6 volt L28 will last for many many rolls so.... you won't need to remove the bottom often.
If things are clean in the battery compartment and in the bottom of the camera... you may just luck out and have good wiring that is read to go!

I use a simple bit of plastic tubing around the L28 and a spring to take up the size difference and make the connection.

carefully clean the threads of both the battery cap and opening
then add a little white lithium grease to the threads of the cap
& the opening in the base plate.
the "squeaky wheel" idea as it sound like
the battery cover is just binding

Yes, you can use soap and water, just be sure to dry everything carefully afterward. I don't recommend putting grease on battery cap threads, the Yashica has a positive ground, and needs good metal-to-metal contact around the battery cap. You can try pushing against the back of the cap as you unscrew it, there is a sheet metal pressure washer built into the cap which can deform and catch the bottom cover. I will be listing some Yashica battery caps and other parts on eBay this weekend, you can search eBay for the things you might need.

The washer is a bit deformed, but I don't see it catching on anything. I'll give it all a wash and see if that helps.
