stupid M9/digital question

Same here, though I've gotten a little better. I mostly shoot B&W because of this, although the new Pentax DSLR has superb AWB, and is allowing me to shoot more color. It'd be nice if the M9 had excellent AWB, and if I could eventually come to afford one.

No worry about the M9, the M8 with its later firmware already has excellent AWB, one of the best in the business, but from your remark I deduce that you shoot JPG, not RAW, as WB is rather irrelevant in that case. Even with the best AWB the results you will get out of JPG will be decent, but no more than that.
For anybody wishing to get really good quality prints out of any digital camera the RAW workflow is an essential skill.
