After reading the manual, I am a little confused about the automatic exposure function on this camera. So, I set the aperture ring to "A", AND I also have to set the shutter speed? With the camera set to "A", I notice the light meter reading will jump up and down when I turn the shutter speed ring, and that's why I think I started to get confused. I thought automatic exposure means everything is controlled... 😕

Also, why is the "30" on the shutter speed ring in blue?

Sorry for the totally newbie questions I've been asking lately...

Sherm,

"the only stupid question is the one unasked"

When the aperture ring is set on "A", the camera is in automatic mode. It will use the shutter speed you have set. The camera will vary the lens aperture to match the light conditions based on the shutter speed. The needle tells you what aperture the camera selects. You can ignore it if you like. If the light is out of range, the shutter button will lock.

When the button is 1/2 down the meter shows what it would use if the shot were taken.

The reason that "30" is in blue, is because that is the commonly accepted lowest speed that a camera can be hand-held without shaking.

I hope that helps,

Hey Lance,
thanks for the answer and encouragement to ask questions. Sometimes on other various forums, I've learned that asking relatively simple questions gets scathing answers. That's why I usually insert the newbie disclaimer and apologies. I am sincere about it though.

What's the advantage to having to choose the shutter speed over having a fully automatic exposure function? Should I just use sunny 16 since the auto exposure on the GIII QL17 seems to be already halfway manual exposure?

G'night all.

the advantage is that if youre shooting something like landscapes at dusk you can select slower shutter speeds and get better depth of feild, having everything in focus. or, say your shooting at a sports event or anything moving you would want to use a faster shutter speed to 'freeze' it with out motion blur.

Hi,

Canonet was produces as a very advanced camera for demanding users. For those who wanted a 'Point Focus and Shoot' there was the Canonet 28. QL 17 has more manual override. It has full manual and shutter priority automatic exposure. theadvantage is that you can control your exposure according to your intentions.

You're faster, yet still the exposure is quite precise. Imagine shooting in town at noon. You might be at a brightly lit square, and the next shot might be in shade of some building.

It seems you don't like the idea of having shutter speed priority, do you? So you want full manual or a P&S ? OK, use canonet in full manual if you like, and get an Olympus MjuII/Stylus Epic. And have fun. Maybeyou could give the shutter speed priority a chance. It's great when shooting in low light. You can choose the longest shutter speed you think you can handhold, and let the camera decide what aperture it needs...

I wonder if it could be the shortest sync shutter speed for flash bulbs... but the handholdable speed idea makes more sense. But you can easily hand hold even a 1/15 with Canonet, because of its leaf shutter.

Hey thanks for the answers, guys.
I'm definitely not adverse to going full manual. I'm just not sure if I'm ready for it yet. Oh well, it's all good. thanks again!
