I read an essay about this years ago, it was an investigation of errors made by pilots when performing mundane procedures, I can’t remember the name of it but iirc everybody does this type of thing, it’s part of being human.
I always, always rewind as soon as I get to the end of the film, I have for over 40 years now, except for the time this summer when I struggled to a remote location to get some shots. When I got back to civilisation, I just took the bottom off … and was horrified to see the film still on the take-up spool

actually, I have to admit, I had a serious blond moment once on my R-D1. Shot an entire set and just couldn't understand why my SD card light kept blinking.
When I was excited to DL the pics, went to open the door and there was no SD card in there... now that was stupid stupid stupid stupid! At least you had some shots to download!

..... how about three pro wrestlers walking down Bay St. in Toronto and I ask if they would let me take their photograph. They agree, I pull out my camera and no SD card whatsoever. Arrrrgggh!! I'll never get one as good as that again.

Jan, that's where you snap the pic - if they want to see what you got, claim it's a film camera. Then at least, you can take your shame in private.

Maybe some brilliant camera designer will come up with a camera featuring a rewind knob that turns as you take pictures, but only has tension on it when you have a card loaded in place. No card and the crank spins freely.
Crap! You'd think that a sophisticated chunk of electronics could include a "NO CARD" warning light blinking away in the finder! Maybe even a little electronic sign facing the subject "No Need To Smile".

You mean like my Olympus e420 ($400 new) which says twice on the info screen on "bootup" NO CARD, and then also indicates in red letters on the review screen NO CARD.
If I recall correctly all the Olympus Four Thirds DSLR's I've had did something similar.

ha ha ha i was just about to say after years of slr, when i started with rangefinder people used to tell me to "un-cap", well hey ho - i am surprised the machines put up with us humans?

Went out to shoot a brilliant sunset the other day with an empty SD card, but alas no luck. It registered full, but without any pictures. Next time I'll bring along at least two cards, even for short stints. The card was OK, but needed formatting. Evidently deleting the files on the MAC, had made a half-arsed job of it. The Epson wouldn't format the card, but the MAC later did.
