Suggestion: Add 'Like' button to posts

By that logic, if you comment positively on one image are you rejecting all the other images you don't comment on?

Likewise, you don't need to click 'like' unless you feel compelled to...

Of course it's attention seeking. Why on earth would you share images on a public forum if you didn't want to draw attention to them?

Comment is what defines a forum, I'm OK with that.
I don't know what likes are.

I share images because I like making them and sometimes feel compelled to share them despite myself. I imagine other contributors might feel similar dualities within photography sometimes.

If you feel differently, OK, cool, ca va.

a like button in a discussion (like this one for instance) would work just like the well known:
"+1, 10 characters"

so why not?

One of the best arguments against implementing the suggestion. Rangefinder Forum isn't every other forum. I find the combination of knowledge, experience and intelligence manifested by its members unique. A like button is a lazy and mediocre way of expressing an opinion. You like something? Don't like it? Make an effort and articulate your thoughts. No, it's not nearly as easy as clicking "like". But all the better for it. (When I say "you" and "your" above, it is in the general sense and not directed at you, Jim).

If you don’t like to like, or would rather like by posting your like separately, you can already do that.

There are also often posts which I think are great, but I don't have anything substantial to add, and I can't Like that post in to show my appreciation.

Same here, and it does not only apply to postings with images in them, but also to DIY solutions and other suggestions made.
It can lead to a degree of annoyance, having to scroll through tens of postings that don't contain much but an "I agree." or "Well done!" - some of them quoting more than necessary from the previous post.

I think it's important to say what we liked or didn't like about a post or a photo. Without that, I don't think a "like" is very meaningful or helpful.

Hmmmm, "Like" is pretty meaningless; it might be a boring picture of a car someone once had and so it gets a "like" and the "like" could be for the camera or film or developer and so on. Lots of different things are liked and commented on in these forums.

Then there's the balance needed of "Dont Like" and that has the same objections, imo. Add in "Average" and it is still silly as then people will want "Better Than Average" buttons to avoid too complex(!) a decision and so it goes on, and on, and on.

It works as it is so don't change/fix it...

Well said, I fully agree. If we like (or do not) something we should at least say why. In this way we can get a better knowledge of each other.

Good that we didn't have to sink into the same "like" hole that wrecked many once vibrant online communities.

Having to actually read to sift through posts, join discussions and express opinions with words, is a luxury today!

Many thematic RFF threads have many pictures I like. Too often I do not acknowledge that appeal because I do not want to go to the trouble of posting individual comments for each example, which could be as many as a dozen on each page of the thread. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then it's worth a simple click to indicate "like."

If a photographer seeks detailed responses to images, then those pictures should be posted in a critique thread that doesn't include "like" functionality.
