Suggestion for a new Coffee With the Mentors Mentor

Thread title "Suggestion for a new Coffee With the Mentors Mentor"

Firstly, it's "coffee with mentors" not "Coffee With Mentors Mentor" but of course that's not important.

Secondly, I wonder if anyone really wants to have coffee with a mentor anyways.

Most of the people that RFF members respect enough to drink coffee with let alone listen to are either dead or not interested in being our mentor to drink coffee with.

How about we just try talking to each other in a civil respectful manor and enjoy drinking coffee with each other?

All the best,

Ken Rockwell figured out the schtick a long time ago: write edgy, talk about THE LEICAMAN, make jokes at the expense of all brands, refer to items as made in Red China. Some will get the humor, others will be outraged and/or offended enough to share links back to his site, he’s made a VERY good living thanks to all the free referrals. It also helps that he’s built a very good reference site in the process.

I read all of these "notables" for the entertainment value only. I have nothing disparaging to say about them as I never read them for advice or send any of them money. I will say that reading them and the responses to them provides a good bit of entertainment.

... as I hope I do too. 😉

Mike, the title was meant to convey that Coffee with the mentors is a thread whose purpose is to facilitate conversation between RFF members and a group of respected experts whom some of us regard as our mentors. From that point of view, one might say that this group might be seen as the "Coffee with the mentors" mentors, in the sense that these are the mentors with whom we are having virtual coffee when we read "Coffee with the mentors". THe way I meant it, is that this group comprises an assemblage that might be considered Coffee with the mentors mentors, not in the sense that the word mentors is being used twice redundantly or unnecessarily, but that the mentors who comprise said group are, in fact, the individuals without whom the thread "Coffee with the mentors" could scarcely meaningfully exist nor serve any purpose. My choice of wording may have been somewhat humorously intended, although I believed that it would be clear enough to most members to risk it. My wife (and others) at times have told me that my sense of humor is "dry;" although I've also been told that "dusty" would be a better fit--while others simply complain it goes over their heads, in the sense of a mis-directed frisbee. A thousand pardons.

It definitely needs to be redone, as does the entire site… 90+ forums?

Do we need to cater that many subjects to be interesting?
The subforums allow for specific topics to be placed in like locations. Are there any subforums which can be collapsed together? It's useful to have subforums like darkroom/processing, and for the many older cameras like X-Pan, half frames, point and shoots etc. We know where to find subjects of interest and it's a great aid for organization. Then again, I'm the guy with multiple folders within folders on my computer and in notetaking programs.

Do we need 90+?

Some haven’t even been active for a decade?

It’s bad enough that newer members can’t even navigate the place.

It doesn't seem that bad to me. Just click on the forums list and everything is there in organized groups.

Those that haven't been active in a decade still hold useful information that can be accessed by those interested. Collapsing them into something else takes away that organization.

Photography covers many subjects so 83 doesn't seem a lot to me and when I joined last July it was easy to find the subjects I was interested in as I'm an experienced forum user but search is a members friend.

There does seem to be decent variability in the subforum population, but inbreeding depression may be serious concern. It would be devastating if there was a collapse and subforums were extirpated. Is there anything we can do to facilitate subforum population growth and diversity? Supplemental feeding?

I know where we can get bumper stickers for low cost. We can raise awareness of the subforum issue. Perhaps a basic "Save The Subforums" much like they did for whales? Or "We All Live Downstream Of A Datacenter" ? I don't think that one is as catchy. Regardless, I'm really concerned about the subforums now.

I don't find the number of forums and subforums difficult at all.

- I open the site and click on What's New. There's usually enough there to keep me busy for my allotted time.
- I open the site and Search for some topic I'm interested in across all forums. That brings up enough hits to keep me busy ... I can then look at whatever else went on in the subforum of any given thread.
- I open the site with some topic to post about in mind. Click through the forums to find an appropriate spot, and create the topic thread.

What's so difficult?

I got a little lost when I was new, umpteen years ago. But I figured it out. Didn't take much time...

I'm always lost for a little bit whenever I join a new forum. I don't think we all need to be babied and led through every bit of stuff in the world, and certainly not if it detracts from the usefulness of the forum for experienced users.

Not difficult for a poster with 13k+

But people do get lost if they are new.
