We now have close to 2,000 posts in this forum and ever greater numbers new viewers visiting here to get some idea of how the R-D1 performs, plus Sean indicates that Epson will also look in from time to time. With this in mind I would like to suggest we have a "Stickey" to help newcomers and occasional visitors. Something along the lines of "Epson R-D1, known problems and some solutions".
I would like it to make clear at the start of such a thread how much most of us here love this camera inspite of some problems.
The danger for newbies visiting most forums dedicated to a particular camera is they see lots of repeatedly listed complaints and are put of purcashing what for them could be a good camera. I want to avoid this. I do think here we tend to be less vitriolic about the problems, we just want to identify them and help work towards a solution, if possible, but I would like to make it clear to potential owners that people shouldn't jump to the conclusion that this is a problem camera as distinct from a camera that like any other you have to know about the issues to use it to full advantage.
So far I can think of 6 major issues:
Poor Rangefinder alignment
Skewed frame lines
Lens compatibility issues (front/back focus)
Hot/Bad pixels on Sensor & occasionally LCD
shutter button problems
The thread could have posts about each of these and where there there are known solutions or work arounds these noted. More important of course than identifying the problem.
Perhaps some of us could take a problem each, one where we have had a fair amount of input. e.g. I could contribute on Lens compatibility, perhaps Ed on Rangefinder alignment, where he has made significant contributions ect. A lot of it could be copied from existing posts or relevant links made including one to Chris's R-D1 Problem Poll or better this could be made a Stickey as well.
I would hope that we could use it just for the problems and solutions and keep general chat about any issues in seperate threads so it remains as a clear and quick FAQ to the R-D1.
What do you all think? I'm willing to kick it off if someone tells me how to make a thread Stickey.

A P.S. to the above. I should of course have noted that such a "Stickey" should suggest that the first ports of call for an understanding of the R-D1 are Sean's review of the camera & lenses. Existing and forthcoming, with the links.

List of accessories like diopters, magnifiers, etc.

Favorite recipes for processing R-D1 files. (sharpening, wb, etc.)

I just want to add that 2 of your topics, "Poor Rangefinder alignment" and "Lens compatibility issues (front/back focus)" may have overlap and ambiguity for some like myself. Many of us have only returned and exchanged cameras with Epson (not cracked them open or had them serviced) and have no way of knowing whether a focusing issue was rangefinder related or one of compatibility of camera to lens. Just a thought. Thanks.

I note from the other thread that you have volunteered as Admin. for this group (well done) joining Joe (backalley photo) as Moderator (thanks for the continuing good job Joe). I therefore think that what finally ends up in FAQ Stickeys about the R-D1 should be approved by one of you first. Anything that is more general chat or a bit off topic could go in another thread. IMHO if these stickeys are to be quickly useful to Newbies and a reference for the rest of us all the information should capable of being found easily without to much of a search (no "Noise").

I am begining to think that as there is more information than just that on problems that people would like readily available the structure of the Stickey(s) should now be more like a general FAQ. It could all go in one Stckey FAQ or maybe two or three stickeys would be better. One on problems & solutions. One on available accessories & converters and one on the most useful tips? What do you think?

I'm a bit busy for the next couple of days but if you like when I get it together I could send you or Joe a Private Message with an opening post for a stickey thread along the lines I first suggested. Hopefully one oof you could edit it (much needed in my case) and then we could add some more contributions. Perhaps we could send Private Messages to members we know have made valuable contributions on topics that should be covered in the FAQ, asking them to make a contribution on that topic (they could edit this from their posts elsewhere making it more appropriate for the stickey). I would hope such members here would be enthusiastic for the idea and if we had multiple contributers it would better reflect the range of opinions. Anyone else of course could submit a topic for consideration.
When we have enough to go with we could ask Joe to make that the first stickey and build on it from there. I'm still trying to get my head around the form this should take so all input is more than welcome.

just a word of caution, too many stickies up front and they soon lose their effectiveness to note that something important is in there.

Combining the whole lot in a FAQ on the R-D1 would be more useful than 20 stickies that still don't quite answer all the questions (or only after a long, thorough search). Than the FAQ can become a sticky.

I am finally online!
My suggestion for stickey/faq: Intermittent problems with shutter release. I have finally sent my RD-1 back for service as a result. More and more problems with shutter presses doing nothing - no shutter release, no photo, no metering. Anyone had this problem? There is thread from Sean on a possible link to the lcd screen, but my problem was completely independent of lcd use.
Any info appreciated.
