Suggestions for PC Sought

Well, took another of my clients shopping yesterday. Ended up getting ANOTHER Toshiba (m745). Specs:

I5 Intel
6 Gb RAM
640 Gb Hard Drive

$699. Not a Sale Price. Regular price at Best Buy.

Now, to be fair, my client (very good CPA) is a bit of an Old Hippie, as am I. She lives simply, bit of a Vegetarian, grew up in a logging camp in Alaska, and is way more than a tint of green. In other words a classic Apple user, although she dresses more conventionally than most, being a professional business woman.

So we spent a fair amount of time at the Apple stand. There were a number of Apple laptops ranging from $939 to slightly over $2000. I won't go into specs here, but the Toshiba she decided on would have compared more readily to about a $1200 Apple.

Also to be fair, this is her sixth Toshiba, counting the one's her son and daughter have packed all over the world. I have both of the son/daughter computers as we have replaced them. They are 7 and 8 years old and I still get some use from them.

I've done warranty repair work for Apple, Toshiba, Compaq, HP, Dell, IBM, Acer, and others mostly in a healthcare environment. I've had everything from top end mini-computers to PDAs apart for repairs and I've had to deal with all of their tech support organizations for business and home. Apple has the best build quality out of all the laptops and desktops I've had apart and HP/Compaq has the best in the server space. Apple also has the best support organization.

Apple laptops are now made of a solid piece of aluminum and that should count for something when you're traveling. I've replaced so many cracked hand rests and lids on PCs it's sad. The Toshiba Satellites were particularly bad about that. Macbooks seem to be fairly doctor proof. A determined one can still break an LCD though.

I think Apple is worth the extra money because of build quality alone. The excellent OS is just a bonus.

It's also pretty funny that guys that own a Leica are using the cheapest laptop they can find. Why not just use a Canikon digital point and shoot or camera in your phone? It takes pictures just fine and hey, it's cheap!

Because it does the job quite efficiently, and leaves more money for lenses.

Point and shoots do the job efficiently, too and no need to buy lenses! They're so cheap, when they die, just buy another one, just like a cheap PC!

I'm not saying that's my mindset, but I know people who have that mindset and can't understand why someone would want to spend more money than they have to for the user experience of something (computer, camera, car, bicycle, whatever). I think a Leica is the top of build and probably image quality of all the cameras made today. I think Apple has the best build quality of all the computers that I've had to service, no religion involved.

If I was going to be picking a computer to take on a long trip, I'd want one that has a solid frame without being too heavy, like a unibody Macbook or maybe a Panasonic Toughbook if I was going somewhere really demanding and could afford the weight. You'll spend more on a Toughbook than a Macbook though.

Having said that, I own neither a Leica nor a Mac, but I'd like to own both.
