I've sort of sworn off adding new lenses to my kit. But I'm starting to think I may make an exception for either the 50 Summar or a 35/3.5 Summaron. Have to start looking for a beat-up copy of either/both.

Some colour shots I did when I first got the lens two years ago (in this case it was attached to my 1942 Leica IIIc)

How does one recognise a coated Summar from an uncoated? Is it by serial number alone?
Thanks

No, many of the uncoated Summars were coated at the factory at a later date, apparently it was an affordable upgrade at some time.
It is by sheen on the glass elements. The difference between an uncoated ('plain' glass) and a coated one ('blueish' hue on glass) is quite distinct.
From a certain production date on (which date?) they were all coated though.

Around serial number 600,000 is there Leica lenses were getting pretty consistently coated.

Posted it here before but this thread seems more appropriate.

I should note this was taken with an old Walz filter in front of the lens. I'm sure this impacted image quality. Given how nice the glass is, I don't want to use it without a filter but I am still holding out for a modern, multicoated one.

One option that I use on my Summar is a step up ring to 37mm filters.
